Job description

Saint John’s High School seeks a long-term substitute middle school Social Studies teacher for the Brother Robert Treanor, CFX Middle School Division. Candidates should have a strong background in education, a commitment to and understanding of middle school boys in and out of the classroom, the ability to utilize technology to enhance student learning, and the drive to engage in ongoing professional development.

The ideal candidate is committed to guiding our students as they construct their understanding of Social Studies and their role in the educational experience. This educator is a collaborator with an appreciation for the teachable moment in their discipline and beyond it, when moral and ethical questions arise in and out of the classroom. A person with consistently high standards, comfortable teaching in a faith-filled school community, the candidate of choice seeks growth and learning every day, both personally and professionally, and inspires others to do the same through optimism, selflessness, flexibility, and teamwork. The selected candidate has a real desire to contribute to the school community by sharing their passions and through additional efforts, such as coaching teams, directing clubs, and supervising activities. A strong sense of initiative and the willingness to serve as an integral part of continuing the development of a new program is essential for this educator.

The teacher will be responsible for the implementation of curricula, designing assessments that measure student progress and achievement, using assessment data to inform instructional practices, and participating in collaborative activities. Required qualifications include: an undergraduate degree in History or a related field (a Master’s would be highly valued), at least three years of middle school teaching experience, proficiency with technology, dedication to working cooperatively with other teachers to maintain and grow a strong middle school program, and robust interpersonal skills. In addition to honor and character, and commitment to intellectual engagement, especially important is the candidate’s demonstrated commitment to an inclusive school community.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree in History or a related field.
  • Experience teaching at the middle school level, or relevant professional experience.
  • Dedication to supporting the academic, social, and emotional well-being of all students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to articulate effectively the values and mission of Saint John’s High School and the Xaverian Brothers.
  • Commitment to Catholic education.
  • Knowledge of contemporary educational issues, topics, and trends, especially those impacting boys and young men.
  • Dedication to partnering collaboratively with a team of talented faculty.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Skill in navigating the Google Suite of applications (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, etc.).
  • Experience with incorporating educational technology into the classroom.
  • Commitment to including and encouraging all students from all backgrounds.

Candidates will be considered immediately, and the position will remain open until filled.

Saint John’s High School has educated young men under the sponsorship of the Xaverian Brothers since 1898. Through the Saint John’s strong college preparatory curriculum, over 900 students in grades seven through twelve pursue personal and intellectual growth in an environment that is committed to the development of the whole person and recognizes a moral dimension of life through service to God and to others.
