Under the direction of the Senior Director of Mental Health Counseling Services, the Faculty, Mental Health Counselor Lead provides clinical and administrative leadership for counseling operations at Austin Community College (ACC). This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, ethical, and accessible mental health services that support student well‑being, retention, and academic success to a multicultural student population. The position balances direct mental health careservices with clinical oversight, including clinical supervision ofcounseling staff, coordination of clinical operations, andleadership in crisis response, outreach, and campus collaboration. The Counselor Lead will serve as a keysupport to the Senior Director of Mental Health Services and theDirector of Wellness, Outreach & Prevention, assisting withdepartmental operations, strategic initiatives, and continuity ofleadership functions that advances departmental goals focused onpersistence, retention, and student engagement that align withACC's mission along with professional standards from Council forthe Advancement of Standards in Higher Education.

Description of Duties & Tasks
  • Manages assigned counseling caseload that will includereferrals from multiple internal and external partners. The mentalhealth counselor will oversee coordination of care that addressesthe full-range of counseling needs of the student population; thatmay require crisis intervention or stabilization in high-stresssituations involving immediate risk to the mental and physicalhealth of students, and that addresses the full-range of counselingneeds of the student population. The mental health counselor willbe part of a Mental Health Counseling team that develops andimplements outreach prevention programs for enrolled AustinCommunity College (ACC) students on topics pertaining to criticalissues in college mental health to support institutional effortsfocusing on persistence, retention and student engagement.
  • Maintains current, accurate, and timely clinical documentationin accordance with state and federal law, professional ethics, anddistrict counseling services protocols.
  • Provides short-term, individual, and group counseling viascheduled in-person or virtual appointments and walk-in coverage tostudents seeking assistance related to personal concerns.
  • Conducts mental health assessments and screenings such assuicide risk, drug and alcohol, threat and risk assessment, etc.,utilizing evidence-based practices.
  • Exercises clinical judgement in assessing urgent studentreferral situations and making appropriate recommendationsregarding intake, referrals, triage, and interventions.
  • Provides support in managing campus crisis situations bycoordinating with ACC mental health officers, administrators,faculty, and staff to provide appropriate intervention andreferral.
  • Provides professional consultation to faculty, staff,administrators, and students related to student mental healthconcerns.
  • Assists and helps coordinate referral of clients to clinical /psychiatric resources between Austin Community College (ACC) andcollege or external community service providers and partners.
  • Reviews client record to determine progress, effectiveness, andappropriateness of intervention strategies and treatment goals;assisting and or coordinating referral of clients to clinical /psychiatric resources addressing obstacles to delivery ofservices.
  • Provides psychoeducational workshops, training, outreach,interactive seminars, videos, and classroom presentations includingMental Health First Aid (MHFA), and/or de-escalation managementregarding students in distress situations to faculty and staffacross the district.
  • Attends and participates in regional and departmental meetings,case consultations, and staff development programs asassigned.
  • Participates in continuing education and professionaldevelopment activities related to the performance of job functionsand the maintenance of skills in professional counseling, includingprovision of professional presentations at local, state, andnational conferences.
  • Assists in planning, implementation, and evaluation ofcompliance programming activities, including but not limited to,those in support of Drug Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA),Title IX Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA), CampusSexual Violence Elimination Act (Campus SaVE) | Clery Act, SuicidePrevention, and Domestic/Dating/Sexual Violence programming.
  • Supports student college persistence through wellnessactivities and partnerships on campus and virtually.
  • Assists with on-site clinical training and developmentopportunities including on-site supervision for graduate levelpracticum and/or internship students.
Technology & Data
  • Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, onlineresources, and other technologies.
  • Provide technological support, administration, and optimizationof the electronic health record (e.g., Titanium).
  • Support data collection, reporting, and program evaluationefforts.
  • Utilize data to inform service delivery, clinical workflows,staffing, and program improvements.

  • Knowledge of current counseling practices, theories,andresearch in college student services.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and the ability to manage counselingservices and wellness programs to include prevention, intervention,counseling, and referral services pertaining to distresses such asdepression, substance abuse, anxiety, crisis management, and otherrelated concerns.
  • Able to provide guidance and direction for counselingprofessionals' administering of appropriate assessment tools.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assignedprograms, projects, and operations with particular emphasis on DrugFree Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA), Title IX, the ViolenceAgainst Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA), Campus Sexual ViolenceElimination Act (Campus SaVE), and the Clery Act.
  • Effectively represent the district in contacts withgovernmental agencies, community groups, and various businesses,professional, educational, regulatory, and legislativeorganizations; establishing community partnerships to workcollaboratively on providing support and resources to the collegestudent population.
  • Understanding of the community college philosophy and missionand how counseling services support student persistence, retention, and engagement.
  • Knowledge of effective leadership and ethics techniques,principles, and practices including Servant-Leadershipprinciples.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to work effectively andcollaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team.
Required Education
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, or relatedbehavioral sciences field from an accredited institution.
Other Requirements
  • Licensed in the State of Texas for: Licensed ProfessionalCounselor-Supervisor (LPC-S), Licensed Marriage and FamilyTherapist-Supervisor (LMFT-S), Licensed Clinical SocialWorker-Supervisor (LCSW-S), or Licensed Psychologist (LP).
  • Must maintain licensure for continued employment.
  • Must maintain individual professional liability coverage.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and reliable transportation neededfor local Austin area travel.
Preferred Work Experience
  • More than three years clinical counseling work experience inhigher education.
  • More than two years of clinical counseling supervision.
  • Two years experience with prevention programming and outreachnetworking relevant to the college population is preferred.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in a standard office or similarenvironment.
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching,kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Work location will be a regional assignment; outreach servicesis subject to district-wide travel.
