Job description

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is seeking one faculty level Therapeutic Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist to participate in clinical, research and teaching programs in the Department of Radiation Oncology at UNMC. Primary clinical responsibilities include performing quality assurance (QA) on radiation therapy equipment, treatment planning and delivery of special procedures (e.g., SRS/SBRT and brachytherapy), and conducting patient chart checks.

Radiation Oncology at UNMC is housed in The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art integrated clinical and research facility that opened in June 2017, located at the main campus that includes three new Varian Linacs with the latest technological advancements. Our department is vibrant, growing, and equipped with five linear accelerators (three Varian TrueBeams and one Edge in Omaha area and one Varian TrueBeam at a satellite hospital) and two Elekta Flexitron HDR units.

Advanced techniques include respiratory motion management and image-guided radiotherapy using OBI/Cone-beam CT, Calypso, and AlignRT, and real-time Ultrasound for prostate HDR brachytherapy. Treatment planning is mainly performed using Varian Eclipse (for external beam therapy) and on Elekta Oncentra and Oncentra Prostate (for brachytherapy). Varian Aria is our Recording and Verification system. Two Philips MR scanners (1.5T and 3T) with MR simulation capability are also available on our main campus. UNMC offers a broad range of special procedures including VMAT, SRS/SBRT, TBI/TSE, IORT, and brachytherapy for a wide range of treatment sites (GYN/breast/prostate treatment). Looking ahead, we are excited about a new proton therapy project currently underway in collaboration with Mevion and Leo Cancer Care.

The successful candidate will join an advanced department of 10 medical physics faculty, 8 radiation oncologist faculty, and 6 certified medical dosimetrists, 4 medical physics residents, and will provide medical physics coverage under the guidance of the Director of Physics. The department has a CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics Residency program with two resident positions and the successful candidate will participate in teaching responsibilities in our residency program. Requirements include a Master’s degree in Medical Physics or related physics field, be ABR board certified (preferred) or board eligible in Therapeutic Radiation Oncology Physics and have a minimum of two years of clinical experience. Candidates with treatment planning skills in SBRT and Flexitron-based HDR brachytherapy will be preferred.
