Job description

Install, maintain, modify, fabricate, troubleshoot, & repair vessel and factory equipment including pumps, motors, belts, conveyors, bearings, hydraulics, control valves, and filtration units. Also, helps the Chief Engineer to maintain the inventory of parts and supplies.

Golden Alaska Seafoods operates the MV Golden Alaska, a 305’ mothership seafood processor that operates in the Bering Sea pollock fishery and Pacific Whiting fishery off the US West Coast.

The MV Golden Alaska has an open recruitment for a Factory Mechanic. Factory Mechanics work under the Factory manager and conduct repairs, fabrication and maintenance in the factory and other production areas of the ship.

For most people, living and working aboard a processing ship is very different from any other situation you will likely encounter and brings challenges on a daily basis. At the height of A Season and B Season it takes the full efforts and resources of over 130 people to keep up with the steady supply of incoming fish and to maintain 24-hour production.

This means demanding, long hours for everyone, constant noise, cramped quarters with little or no privacy, fatigue, physical discomfort and boredom. Don’t come aboard the vessel with adventurous notions of life at sea. In reality, life at sea is often dull and uncomfortable. It certainly is not an experience for everyone.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Possess sound mechanical knowledge and experience, preferably from fishing vessels or similar processing equipment
  • Familiarization with factory equipment and systems, ability to recognize normal operation of all equipment.
  • Install, maintain and repair vessel and factory equipment including pumps, motors, belts, and conveyors, bearings, hydraulics, control valves, and filtration units
  • Modify, fabricate and repair factory equipment
  • Maintain adequate and accurate inventory of necessary parts and supplies, under guidance of Chief Engineer
  • Troubleshoot problems with equipment onboard the vessel and assesses to determine most effective and efficient means of repair
  • Utilize tig, mig and arc welding skills to modify, fabricate and repair equipment as directed
  • Understand and comply with all company safety policies and procedures
  • Must be available to work both at sea and in the shipyard periods
Qualifications
  • Working cooperatively with the Factory Manager and Engineering department.
  • 3+ years’ experience in a Factory Mechanic role on board a fishing vessel preferred.
  • Knowledge of surimi equipment such as screw presses, refiners, mixers, rotary screens, decanters, conveyors, etc.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, welding stainless with Tig and stick equipment.
