Job summary

Town of Oro Valley’s Parks & Recreation Department seeks a Lifeguard to supervise daily operations, monitor safety, and coordinate lifeguarding staff. Responsibilities include water testing, pool maintenance, opening/closing, customer service, and emergency response using First Aid, CPR, and AED.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma, one year lifeguard experience, and ARC certifications; oxygen certification required within 90 days of hire.

Qualifications

• Must have American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED certifications.
• Must obtain Administering Emergency Oxygen within 90 days of hire.
• One year lifeguard experience; prefer supervisory exposure.

Responsibilities

• Supervise lifeguard staff and daily pool operations.

• Provide customer service and handle inquiries or complaints.

Job description

Position will be open until filled

Serves in a Lifeguarding capacity and, under direction, supervises, monitors, and coordinates lifesaving personnel, daily operation and maintenance activities of the Town's Parks & Recreation Department.

• Ensures the health and safety of employees and patrons.
• Performs routine water tests and makes necessary adjustments to pool chemicals.
• Prepares pool and facility for the opening and/or closing of the day.
• Searches for and removes safety hazards.
• Maintains cleanliness of pool and facility.
• Supervises the day-to-day activities including communicating, scheduling work, training, evaluating, and motivating staff.
• Maintains records, and reports on daily attendance.
• Operates and performs preventative maintenance on pool equipment including, but not limited to, the pump room.
• Provides customer service and answers questions, complaints or concerns.
• Responds to emergency situations by performing First Aid, CPR and/or Lifeguard Training Rescues/Techniques.
• Assists with personnel actions such as selection, promotion, discipline, and evaluations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written communication.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines and follow up on work assignments with minimal supervision.
• Knowledge of customer service techniques and methods.
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and procedures.
• Knowledge of pool maintenance and operation techniques.
• Knowledge of Town and Department policies and procedures.
• Skill in planning and implementing department and swimming pool practices and procedures.
• Skill in responding to emergency situations including safely rescuing drowning victims and administering CPR and First Aid.

• A High School diploma or GED.
• One (1) year experience as a Lifeguard.
• Must possess at time of application and maintain American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) certifications.
• Must obtain within 90 days of hire, and maintain, American Red Cross Administering Emergency Oxygen certification.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor and Administering Emergency Oxygen certification.

• Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment.
• Occasional exposure to communicable diseases associated with first aid procedures.
• Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to temperatures that exceed 110 degrees.
• Frequent exposure to chemical hazards including calcium hypochlorite and muriatic acid.
• Occasional exposure to mechanical and/or electrical hazards associated with pool operational equipment.
• Frequent exposure to noise and vibration relating to pool operational equipment.
• Seasonal exposure to moisture/humidity as well as extreme temperatures.
• Must be able to lift or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
• Regular, daily attendance is an essential function for this position.
