Position Overview

Facility Operator Trainee under the direction of the Field Supervisor, supporting the operation of water production facilities, wastewater treatment facilities, lift and booster stations, distribution systems, and wastewater collection systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Maintains equipment at assigned water production facilities and booster stations.
  • Operates and maintains distribution systems including mains, valves, hydrants, and service lines.
  • Maintains equipment at wastewater treatment facilities and lift stations.
  • Operates and maintains sewer collection systems including collection mains and pump stations.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs service piping and related equipment.
  • Performs routine water quality analysis per established processes and procedures.
  • Makes operational adjustments to comply with state and federal water quality standards.
  • Adjusts chemical treatment to ensure water quality meets standards.
  • Calculates various ratios and dosages.
  • Completes customer service work orders, updates and maintains documentation, and closes work orders per department policies.
  • Performs all tasks safely, professionally, and in compliance with company policies, local, state, and federal laws, rules, and guidelines.
  • Assists with other tasks or projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No previous experience required.
  • A valid U.S. Driver’s License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Familiarity with computers/tablets and basic operation of database, spreadsheet, and word processing programs preferred.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow operating instructions both written and verbal.
  • Mathematical ability to perform calculations for ratios, dosages, and volumetric calculations required for wastewater and water treatment plant operations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and written communication.
  • Understanding of the necessity to prevent wastewater pollution of area waters.
  • Understanding and maintenance of plan processes through computer-controlled equipment.
  • A team player who works effectively in a multi‑tasking environment.
CAREER PROGRESSION

FO Trainee – must obtain either a ClassI Wastewater or Water TreatmentI license within 18 months of employment.

FOI – Minimum license requirement: ClassI Wastewater or Water TreatmentI.

FOII – Minimum license requirement: ClassII Wastewater or Water TreatmentII.

FOIII – Minimum license requirement: ClassIII Wastewater or Water TreatmentIII.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Subject to extreme temperatures, noise, wet and/or humid conditions, mechanical, electrical, gas exposure hazards, fumes, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poor ventilation atmospheres.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Travel to work sites of Essential Utilities and/or other constituents.
  • Must obtain a CDL ClassC with Hazmat endorsement within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be available for on‑call nights and weekends on a rotation to support a 24‑hour/7‑day operation.
