Job summary

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in Ray Brook, NY seeks an interior operations crew member for trail maintenance and boundary line work, often in remote mountains and harsh weather. The role requires operating power tools and potentially snowmobiles/ATVs, with overnight outpost stays possible.

Qualifications

  • One year of service as a Facility Operations Assistant 1 or Motor Vehicle Operator; OR two years of full-time, verifiable experience in custodial, grounds, or maintenance operation or assisting in a journey-level trade.
  • Must possess a valid New York State driver's license.
  • Position based out of Ray Brook, required to work in remote mountainous locations in adverse weather.

Responsibilities

  • Operate chainsaws, brush saws and most hand and power tools.
  • May be required to operate snowmobiles and ATVs as necessary.
  • Overnight stays at interior outposts may be required.
  • Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing and electrical is helpful.
  • Must adhere to all safety protocols.
  • Must follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must utilize snowshoes and skis for winter travel.
  • Experience with map and compass, land navigation and wilderness travel is desirable.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

One year of service as a Facility Operations Assistant 1 or Motor Vehicle Operator; OR, two years of full-time, verifiable experience in custodial, grounds, or maintenance operation or assisting in a journey-level trade. Must possess a valid New York State driver's license.

Additional Comments

This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2027, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.

Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Transportation needs of this position require use of a state vehicle and adhering to the Department’s Vehicle Policy. You must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for this position.

Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.

Must be able to work in remote areas.

Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

Overtime may be required.

Weekends and holidays may be required.

Must be able to lift and move objects up to 60 pounds.
