The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled, semi-skilled, and manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of city buildings, equipment, facilities, and related systems.

Essential Functions
- Provides direction, guidance and assistance to employees; makes work assignments; monitors status of work in progress', inspects completed work; provides training as needed.
- Performs general repair and maintenance work on city buildings, equipment, facilities, and related systems, including heating/ventilation/air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, gas, structural repairs, and building construction/renovation projects; ensures that operations and maintenance of buildings, equipment, and systems are in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Performs various skilled, semi-skilled, and manual work functions associated with department projects.
- Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with constructing, remodeling, repairing, or maintaining buildings and systems, which may include a utility vehicle, back hoe, trencher, loader, air conditioner, chiller, air handler, boiler, heater, generator, pump, torch, heat gun, skill saw, drill press, drill, torch, gauges, meters, pressure washer, paint sprayer, carpenter tools, painting tools, power tools, mechanic tools, and diagnostic instruments.
- Tests machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations; makes adjustments, repairs or replacements as appropriate.
- Purchases, orders, or picks tip materials as needed; transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.
- Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
- Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Assists in monitoring inventory levels of parts, equipment, tools, or supplies; initiates requests for new or replacement materials.
- Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
- Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, work orders, purchase orders, and other documents.
- Receives various forms, reports, work orders, invoices, price quotes, blueprints, diagrams, manuals, codes policies, procedures, reference materials, or other documentation, reviews, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
- Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, vendors/ suppliers, sales representatives, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Communicates via telephone and two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.
- Skill in operating and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.
- Ability to calculate and/or tabulate data. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.
- Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures and standards.
- Ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information.
- Ability to calculate decimals and percentages.
- Ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
- Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by vocational/ technical training in mechanics, painting, plumbing, electricity, carpentry, general building construction, or a related field; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving mechanics, painting, plumbing, electrical work, construction or general building maintenance/repair; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses or Certifications:Valid State of Alabama driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:The work is moderate work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Work requires regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed in an outdoor environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
