Since 1945, U-Haul has served do-it-yourself movers and their households. The concept was born out of the need for accessible, one-way, nationwide moving equipment, which facilitated mobility across the U.S. and Canada. Co-founders L.S. "Sam" Shoen and Anna Mary Carty Shoen recognized this need and acted, creating an industry that transformed the moving process with orange U-Haul trailers.
U-Haul is committed to health and wellness. As of February 1, 2020, U-Haul will not hire individuals in states where it may lawfully decline to hire nicotine users, including Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. This policy applies to new hires after this date, except where legally prohibited.
