Job Description Summary: Harford County Government is seeking a dependable and service-oriented Building/Park Attendant to assist with the daily operation, maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and security of County buildings, parks, and recreational facilities. This position performs a variety of custodial, grounds maintenance, facility operations, and public service duties. The Building/Park Attendant interacts directly with the public, assists facility users, maintains clean and safe facilities and grounds, opens and secures assigned locations, and responds appropriately to safety concerns and emergencies. Assignments may vary depending upon the facility and operational needs. Employees may work independently with minimal supervision and must be comfortable performing both routine facility duties and physically demanding outdoor work.

BUDGETED SALARY: $15.00/HOURLY

Essential Duties:
BUILDING ATTENDANT:
  • Maintains assigned buildings and premises in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition, including cleaning restrooms and removing trash.
  • Answers telephone calls and provides information to the public; assists individuals with questions or concerns, refers them to appropriate personnel, takes messages, and greets, monitors, and directs visitors as needed.
  • Assists with the setup and relocation of groups within the facility for meetings, classes, programs, activities, and other events.
  • Opens, closes, and secures assigned buildings and grounds; contacts law enforcement when necessary.
  • Instructs facility users on the safe and proper use of the facility, equipment, and amenities.
  • Moves furniture, equipment, and other medium to heavy objects as necessary.
  • Removes snow, ice, and debris from exterior steps, sidewalks, and walkways; spreads salt or other materials as needed.
  • Performs general lawn care and landscaping activities, including weeding, raking, and trimming.
  • Depending upon assignment, operates a computer, handles cash receipts, and/or manages a concession stand.
  • Works independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Makes emergency calls related to the facility and contacts 911 when necessary.
  • Communicates safety concerns, vandalism, injuries, property damage, maintenance concerns, and other incidents to the Recreation Specialist or appropriate supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
PARK ATTENDANT:
  • Maintains a positive, courteous, and inviting demeanor that reflects positively on Harford County Parks and Recreation and Harford County Government.
  • Responds to inquiries and provides information to the public regarding pavilion rentals, park facilities, amenities, rules, and procedures.
  • Assists members of the public with questions and concerns; refers individuals to appropriate personnel and takes messages as necessary.
  • Greets, monitors, and directs park visitors and facility users.
  • Advices park users regarding the safe and proper use of facilities, equipment, and amenities.
  • Reads, interprets, and enforces posted park and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Maintains assigned buildings, pavilions, restrooms, park offices, amenities, grounds, and other premises in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Performs routine cleaning of pavilions, restrooms, offices, and other assigned facilities and removes trash and debris.
  • Performs general lawn care and landscaping activities, including weeding, raking, trimming, and other grounds maintenance.
  • Operates utility vehicles and small-engine equipment, including string trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, and similar equipment.
  • May oversee volunteer groups working at assigned parks or facilities.
  • Opens, closes, and secures assigned buildings and grounds.
  • Contacts the Sheriff's Office, Emergency Services, or other appropriate emergency personnel when necessary.
  • Communicates safety concerns, vandalism, injuries, property damage, maintenance concerns, and other incidents to the Recreation Specialist or appropriate supervisor.
  • Works independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
  • Cleaning methods, materials, equipment, and procedures.
  • Basic building maintenance and grounds maintenance practices.
  • Safe operating procedures for power tools, hand tools, and other equipment.
  • Facility and departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Safely operate power tools, hand tools, and other assigned equipment.
  • Perform minor building maintenance and trash collection.
  • Deal cooperatively, courteously, and professionally with members of the public.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, volunteers, facility users, and members of the public.
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Read, interpret, and enforce applicable facility and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain simple records and files.
  • Recognize and report safety hazards, injuries, vandalism, property damage, and other concerns.
  • Lift and move medium to heavy objects.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, climb, reach, stand, and walk for extended periods.
  • Perform physical and manual labor safely and effectively.
Depending Upon Assignment:
  • Operate a computer and perform basic data entry or recordkeeping.
  • Handle cash receipts.
  • Operate a golf cart, John Deere Gator, utility vehicle, or other assigned equipment.

Education: Possession of a high school diploma, vocational-technical school, or GED certificate.

  • A valid Class "C" non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points.
