Job summary

Iowa Department of Transportation is hiring temporary full-time Trade Assistants to help keep our facilities operating smoothly at the Ames Complex. The role involves general maintenance, basic upkeep, and support for skilled trades staff in a fast-paced environment.

Shifts are Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 4:30 with flexible hours as needed. Candidates should have a valid Iowa driver's license and be comfortable working with basic tools, safety procedures, and travel between sites if required.

Qualifications

• No formal education required.
• General knowledge in building and mechanical trades (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc.).
• Ability to travel between sites if needed.

Responsibilities

• Assist with general maintenance tasks, including repairs, installations, and basic upkeep of facilities or equipment.
• Perform manual labor such as lifting, carrying, assembling materials, or preparing work areas.
• Operate hand tools and basic power tools safely and in accordance with guidelines.
• Support skilled trades staff by gathering materials, cleaning workspaces, and completing prep tasks.
• Follow safety procedures and report unsafe conditions or equipment issues promptly.
