Job summary

Meow Wolf is seeking a Facility Maintenance Technician to support day‑to‑day maintenance, repair, inspection, and upkeep of the Los Angeles facility. This hands‑on role covers drywall, painting, carpentry, fixture installation, and general building repairs, with licensed contractors handling major trades.

Responsibilities include coordinating with onsite teams, documenting preventive maintenance in the CMMS, and ensuring safety and cleanliness across exhibits and public areas.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional experience in facilities maintenance, commercial construction, building renovation, fabrication, skilled trades, or related hands‑on field.
• Hands‑on maintenance experience across multiple types of building repair; willingness to learn across a broader range of facility needs.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and practical troubleshooting skills.
• Safe operation of common hand tools, power tools, ladders, and shop equipment.
• Experience completing general building repairs (drywall patching, painting, hardware replacement, mounting, assembly, carpentry, fixture installation, or similar work).
• Ability to troubleshoot, identify causes, complete repairs within skill level, and recognize when specialized/licensed support is required.
• Ability to read and understand basic plans, equipment documentation, diagrams, manuals, and written work instructions.
• Strong understanding of safe work practices and ability to recognize unsafe conditions.

Responsibilities

• Serve as onsite point of contact for contractors as assigned (providing access, locating equipment, communicating site conditions, supporting work in operational areas).
• Complete preventative maintenance and inspection activities per established schedules and document completed work in the CMMS.
• Conduct routine inspections of facility and equipment to identify maintenance, safety, cleanliness, or repair needs.
• Support minor renovation, fabrication, installation, and facility improvement projects.

Compensation: The pay rate for this position is $32.00 per hour. “Off-scale hourly rates” and other pay components, i.e., an hourly rate higher than the published system-wide hourly rate at the designated position grade, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Facility Maintenance Technician supports day-to-day maintenance, repair, inspection, and upkeep of the building and supporting systems. This hands-on, versatile role covers multiple trades: routine and intermediate repairs, preventative maintenance, inspections, painting, drywall repair, carpentry, fabrication, equipment installation, filter changes, hardware replacement, and general building maintenance. Major electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire/life-safety, and elevator work requiring licensed/specialized trades are handled by qualified contractors.

The technician supports onsite contractors by providing site access, locating equipment/systems, communicating site-specific information, and coordinating as directed by the Facilities Manager. Works closely with Exhibition and other departments to identify facility issues impacting operations or guest experience. Documents preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs, and asset information in Meow Wolf’s CMMS and regularly inspects the facility for safety, condition, cleanliness, and repair needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform routine building maintenance, repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance across the facility.
• Hands-on tasks: drywall repair, patching, painting, carpentry, hardware replacement, fixture installation, mounting, basic plumbing repairs, filter changes, adjustments, assembly, and general building repairs.
• Diagnose building and equipment issues; determine if work is completed internally or escalated to the Facilities Manager and qualified contractors.
• Support upkeep of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire/life-safety systems, doors, walls, floors, ceilings, fixtures, and facility assets.
• Support qualified electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, elevator technicians, fire/life-safety vendors, and other contractors performing specialized/licensed work onsite.
• Serve as onsite point of contact for contractors as assigned (providing access, locating equipment, communicating site conditions, supporting work in operational areas).
• Complete preventative maintenance and inspection activities per established schedules and document completed work in the CMMS.
• Conduct routine inspections of facility and equipment to identify maintenance, safety, cleanliness, or repair needs.
• Support minor renovation, fabrication, installation, and facility improvement projects.
• Fabricate, modify, assemble, or install facility components, fixtures, shelving, tables, storage solutions, protective elements, and custom items as needed.
• Maintain safe, organized, and functional shop and work areas.
• Monitor critical spare parts, filters, materials, and maintenance supplies; communicate replenishment needs.
• During shift, respond to building emergencies, alarms, leaks, equipment failures, and urgent facility issues as assigned.
• Follow applicable safety procedures, site policies, regulatory requirements, and safe work practices.
• Communicate clearly with Facilities Manager, Exhibition, Operations, Security, and other departments regarding facility conditions and active work.
• Support waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and environmentally responsible facility practices.
• Maintain a professional, respectful work environment while providing high service standards to staff, guests, and contractors.

• Advanced carpentry, woodworking, cabinetmaking, or millwork experience.
• Metal fabrication experience (welding, grinding, cutting, drilling, custom fabrication).
• Fabricating custom shelving, tables, carts, storage systems, protective barriers, fixtures, or functional facility elements.
• HVAC maintenance, troubleshooting, controls, scheduling, or mechanical experience.
• Commercial construction, renovation, tenant improvement, or build‑out experience.
• Reading architectural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or construction drawings.
• Experience with doors, locks, door hardware, glazing, framing, flooring, or finish carpentry.
• Experience with pumps, motors, compressors, mechanical equipment, or similar building systems.
• CAD, drafting, fabrication drawing, or digital layout experience.
• Supporting contractors or coordinating work within an operating commercial facility.
• Experience in museums, attractions, entertainment venues, retail, recreation, hospitality, or high‑traffic public spaces.
• Experience in creative, fabrication, theatrical, scenic, or art‑production environments.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Requirements listed are representative of knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or ability required.

Operates primarily in an indoor setting with exposure to noisy environments, dim lighting, strong visual effects (strobing lights, special effects, smoke machines), and small/enclosed spaces. Outdoor settings may be required for special events or maintenance/troubleshooting. Working at heights required at times (equipment/training provided).

Work Schedule

Full‑time position (avg. 40 hours/week). Requires flexible schedule to accommodate times the exhibit is closed to the public as well as normal operating hours. Evening, overnight, and weekend work required as duties demand.
