Job summary

Meow Wolf’s Los Angeles facilities team seeks a hands-on Facility Maintenance Technician to maintain and repair a dynamic, public-facing space. You will perform trades across drywall, painting, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tasks, while coordinating with contractors and documenting work in the CMMS.

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, you will ensure safe, efficient operation of our venue with a focus on guest experience and operational reliability.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional experience in facilities maintenance, commercial construction, or related hands-on field.
• Hands-on maintenance across multiple building repair types and willingness to learn broader needs.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and practical troubleshooting.
• Experience safely using common hand and power tools.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine building maintenance, repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance.
• DIY carpentry, drywall, painting, hardware replacement, fixture installation and related repairs.
• Diagnose issues and escalate to Facilities Manager or contractors as needed.
• Support building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life-safety.
• Coordinate with contractors onsite and document work in the CMMS.
• Maintain clean, safe shop areas and manage spare parts and supplies.

Job Description

Compensation: The pay rate for this position is $32.00 per hour. “Off‑scale hourly rates” and other components of pay, i.e., an hourly rate that is higher than the published system‑wide hourly rate at the designated position grade, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Facility Maintenance Technician supports the day‑to‑day maintenance, repair, inspection, and upkeep of the building and its supporting systems. This role is for a hands‑on, versatile maintenance professional comfortable working across multiple trades and solving a wide variety of facility needs. The Facility Maintenance Technician will perform routine and intermediate repairs, preventative maintenance, inspections, painting, drywall repair, carpentry, fabrication, equipment installation, filter changes, hardware replacement, and other general building maintenance. Work requiring licensed or specialized trades, including major electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire/life‑safety, and elevator work, will be completed by qualified contractors. The technician will support contractors while they are onsite by providing site access, helping locate equipment and building systems, communicating site‑specific information, and assisting with coordination as directed by the Facilities Manager. This position works closely with the Exhibition team and other departments to identify facility issues that may impact operations or the guest experience. The technician will document preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs, and asset information within Meow Wolf's CMMS and will regularly inspect the facility for safety, condition, cleanliness, and repair needs.

Job Responsibilities

• Perform routine building maintenance, repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance across the facility.
• Perform hands‑on work including drywall repair, patching, painting, carpentry, hardware replacement, fixture installation, mounting, basic plumbing repairs, filter changes, adjustments, assembly, and general building repairs.
• Diagnose building and equipment issues and determine whether work can be completed internally or requires escalation to the Facilities Manager and a qualified contractor.
• Support the upkeep of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire/life‑safety systems, doors, walls, floors, ceilings, fixtures, and other facility assets.
• Support qualified electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, elevator technicians, fire/life‑safety vendors, and other contractors while they perform specialized or licensed work onsite.
• Serve as an onsite point of contact for contractors as assigned by the Facilities Manager, including providing access, locating equipment, communicating site conditions, and supporting work within operational areas.
• Complete preventative maintenance and inspection activities according to established schedules and document completed work within the CMMS.
• Conduct routine inspections of the facility and equipment to identify maintenance, safety, cleanliness, or repair needs.
• Support minor renovation, fabrication, installation, and facility improvement projects.
• Fabricate, modify, assemble, or install facility components, fixtures, shelving, tables, storage solutions, protective elements, and other custom items as needed.
• Maintain safe, organized, and functional shop and work areas.
• Monitor critical spare parts, filters, materials, and maintenance supplies and communicate replenishment needs.
• During shift, respond to building emergencies, alarms, leaks, equipment failures, and other urgent facility issues as assigned.
• Follow all applicable safety procedures, site policies, regulatory requirements, and safe work practices.
• Communicate clearly with the Facilities Manager, Exhibition team, Operations, Security, and other departments regarding facility conditions and active work.
• Support waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and environmentally responsible facility practices.
• Maintain a professional and respectful work environment while providing a high level of service to staff, guests, and contractors.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• 3+ years of professional experience in facilities maintenance, commercial construction, building renovation, fabrication, skilled trades, or a related hands‑on field.
• Hands‑on maintenance experience across multiple types of building repair and willingness to learn across a broader range of facility needs.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and practical troubleshooting skills.
• Experience safely using common hand tools, power tools, ladders, and shop equipment.
• Experience completing general building repairs such as drywall patching, painting, hardware replacement, mounting, assembly, carpentry, fixture installation, or similar work.
• Ability to troubleshoot a problem, identify the likely cause, complete appropriate repairs within your skill level, and recognize when specialized or licensed support is required.
• Ability to safely support work around building systems including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, and fire/life‑safety systems.
• Ability to read and understand basic plans, equipment documentation, diagrams, manuals, and written work instructions.
• Strong understanding of safe work practices and the ability to recognize unsafe conditions.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively to changing operational needs.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with technicians, contractors, vendors, and employees from other departments.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Basic computer proficiency and ability to use Google Workspace, CMMS/work‑order software, and other digital tools.
• Ability to document completed work, inspections, equipment conditions, and maintenance findings accurately.
• Strong customer‑service mindset when working in an active public‑facing facility.

Nice‑to‑Have Skills & Experience

• Advanced carpentry, woodworking, cabinetmaking, or millwork experience.
• Metal fabrication experience, including welding, grinding, cutting, drilling, and fabrication of custom components.
• Experience fabricating custom shelving, tables, carts, storage systems, protective barriers, fixtures, or other functional facility elements.
• Electrical trade experience or relevant training/certification; California electrical license preferred.
• Commercial electrical troubleshooting, installation, or repair experience.
• Plumbing installation, troubleshooting, or repair experience.
• HVAC maintenance, troubleshooting, controls, scheduling, or mechanical experience.
• Commercial construction, renovation, tenant improvement, or build‑out experience.
• Experience reading architectural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or other construction drawings.
• Experience with doors, locks, door hardware, glazing, framing, flooring, or finish carpentry.
• Experience working with pumps, motors, compressors, mechanical equipment, or similar building systems.
• CAD, drafting, fabrication drawing, or digital layout experience.
• Experience supporting contractors or coordinating work within an operating commercial facility.
• Experience working in museums, attractions, entertainment venues, retail environments, recreation facilities, hospitality, or other high‑traffic public spaces.
• Experience working in a creative, fabrication, theatrical, scenic, or art‑production environment.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This job primarily operates in an indoor setting with exposure to noisy environments, dim lighting, strong visual effects including strobing lights, special effects, smoke machines and small and/or enclosed spaces. Outdoor settings may also be required for special events or as needed for maintenance and troubleshooting. This position may work at heights at times and equipment and training will be provided. Moving in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including small, enclosed spaces.

Remaining in a stationary position for prolonged periods.

Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

Positioning or moving objects up to 75 pounds.

Use of maintenance tools and cleaning equipment, includes use of cleaning agents and chemicals.

Work Schedule

This is a full‑time position, working an average of 40 hours a week. It requires a flexible schedule to accommodate times the exhibit is closed to the public as well as normal operating hours. Evening, overnight and weekend work are required as job duties demand.
