Job Summary

The National Aquarium is seeking a Facilities Technician responsible for keeping all buildings, equipment and grounds well‑maintained, clean, and operational in a first‑class manner. The role provides on‑site support for locks and doors, general carpentry, and commercial maintenance. The Technician supports the Life Support (LS) Department by performing daily inspections of all LS water transfer equipment, assessing, repairing, replacing, rebuilding, and maintaining mechanical equipment as required. Work‑orders are completed proactively and in a customer‑oriented manner. A valid driver’s licence is required, and weekend availability is mandatory.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain all buildings, equipment, and grounds in a first‑class manner.
  • Repair and replace internal and external door and lock systems.
  • Perform general carpentry and architectural maintenance.
  • Support maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Serve as the primary maintenance officer for all Aquarium buildings and grounds.
  • Apply journeyed‑trade knowledge in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, and pump system trades.
  • Utilize non‑journeyed trade knowledge for Ozone, life‑support systems, pumps, motors, sand filters, etc.
  • Acquire cross‑training in journeyed trades to ensure work orders can be completed by any Facilities team member.
  • Maintain all facilities systems to operate consistently and reliably.
  • Maintain Life Support and general building pumping systems.
  • Troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Use basic computer programs such as Microsoft Office.
  • Adapt to unrelated problems and projects within one day.
  • Communicate regularly with staff in other departments regarding work‑order status, changes, complications, completions, and resolutions.
  • Coordinate work with Life Support and Operations to minimize disruptions to daily business and visitors.
  • Oversee major pump repairs performed by outside vendors.
  • Complete work and projects in a timely fashion and within the set schedule.
  • Work weekends and holidays as scheduled.
  • Support the company mission.
  • Adhere to all organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications
  • High School Education or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5–6 years in the specified trade, with at least 1 year at the Journeyman level. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program and Journeyman certificate preferred.
  • Step‑up skills in Electrical, Plumbing, Pumps, Mechanical, and Carpentry.
  • Locksmith experience preferred.
  • Safety and CPR training.
  • Valid driver’s licence and ability to pass DOT physical.
  • Authority to be insured by the organization’s fleet policy.
  • Minimal supervision required.
Compensation

Hourly rate: $21.78 – $27.67 per hour. Hours over 40 per week are overtime eligible, with premium pay for National Aquarium–recognized holidays and shift differential for overnight shifts.
