Job summary

Wayfair is seeking a Facilities Specialist to own maintenance across electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical systems in our retail environment. You will diagnose issues, mentor teammates, and optimize facility layouts to support evolving needs.

Ideal candidates have 4–6 years in facilities or maintenance, strong troubleshooting and safety skills, and are comfortable working nights, weekends, or holidays as required. This full‑time role emphasizes independence and proactive problem solving.

Qualifications

  • 4–6 years of experience in facilities or maintenance (retail, distribution or manufacturing preferred).
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and perform diagnostics on high‑ and low‑voltage systems.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools and CMMS.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, HVAC components and fire protection systems.
  • Able to lift up to 75 lbs and work in non‑climate controlled environments.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
  • Adherence to lockout/tagout and PPE safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire protection, and mechanical systems.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot complex materials handling equipment; read relay logic and ladder diagrams.
  • Mentor teammates with real‑time coaching to improve skills.
  • Contribute to design, layout, and reconfiguration of facility systems.
  • Use CMMS to plan, track, and complete work orders and preventative maintenance.
  • Operate aerial lifts, forklifts, and other powered industrial trucks safely.
  • Keep workspace clean, organized, and stocked, with well‑documented records.
  • Perform emergency repairs with safety protocols in mind.

The hourly rate is a fixed entry rate for this position and applies to all new hires. While our system may display a pay range, this role’s starting rate is non-negotiable. Future pay increases are determined by performance, growth, and time in role, in accordance with our compensation policy.

As a Facilities Specialist in our physical retail location, you'll take ownership of the systems and equipment that keep our space running. This role is ideal for a skilled maintenance professional who thrives on independence, problem‑solving, and making things work behind the scenes.

What Does a Facilities Specialist Do?
  • Solve Problems at the Source: Independently diagnose and repair systems across electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire protection, and mechanical areas, often with minimal supervision.
  • Tackle Technical Challenges: Maintain and troubleshoot systems and complex material handling equipment. Proficiency with relay logic, ladder diagrams, sensors, drives, and inverters is key.
  • Lead Through Action: Serve as a mentor to fellow team members by providing real‑time coaching and technical guidance to improve skills and performance.
  • Optimize Our Systems: Contribute to the design, layout, and reconfiguration of facility systems as needed to support evolving business needs.
  • Stay Organized and On Schedule: Use our CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) to plan, track, and complete work orders and preventative maintenance.
  • Operate Equipment Safely: Regularly work on aerial lifts, boom lifts, forklifts, and other powered industrial trucks to reach all areas of the facility.
  • Keep It Clean and Ready: Maintain a tidy, well‑stocked workspace and ensure all tools and equipment are in good working order.
  • Respond Quickly: Perform emergency repairs during high‑pressure situations while adhering to all safety protocols.
You’ll Thrive In This Role If You Have
  • Technical Expertise: 4–6 years of experience in facilities or maintenance roles (preferred), ideally in a retail, distribution, or manufacturing environment.
  • Advanced Troubleshooting Skills: Able to read and interpret electrical schematics and perform diagnostics on high‑voltage systems (120, 240, 480 VAC) and low‑voltage DC (24VDC).
  • Tool Proficiency: Skilled with hand and power tools, multimeters, and computer‑based diagnostics.
  • Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with PLC systems, HVAC components, and fire protection systems.
  • Agility and Strength: Able to lift up to 75 lbs, climb ladders, bend, kneel, crawl, and work on your feet for long periods, often in a non‑climate‑controlled environment.
  • Detail Orientation: High level of accuracy when performing repairs and maintaining records.
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work night shifts, weekends, holidays, and unscheduled overtime, as needed.
  • Commitment to Safety: Follows lockout/tagout procedures and wears personal protective equipment (PPE), including arc flash gear and safety shoes.
Additional Physical And Environmental Requirements
  • Physical Activity: Frequent standing, walking, and reaching with hands and arms; occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, and crawling.
  • Mobility & Movement: Frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching throughout the day.
  • Lifting Ability: Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs independently on a regular basis. Some projects may involve heavier items, which must be managed with proper assistance or equipment.
  • Vision Requirements: Includes close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Temperature Flexibility: Comfortable in environments with varying temperature conditions.
  • Noise Tolerance: Occasional exposure to moderate noise levels and physical activity.
  • Safety Awareness: Minimal exposure to workplace or environmental hazards—must adhere to all safety protocols.
