Position Title

Facilities Manager



Location

St. John Neumann Catholic Church & School, Columbia, SC



Position Summary

The Facilities Manager is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, upkeep, and operational readiness of all St. John Neumann facilities, including the church, school buildings, and rectory. This is a hands-on, campus-based role focused on keeping all spaces safe, clean, functional, and properly prepared for liturgical, educational, and parish activities. This position reports directly to the Business Manager and works closely with the Pastor, Principal, and ministry staff.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Building Maintenance & Walkthroughs


  • Conduct regular walkthroughs of the church, school, and rectory to identify and document maintenance needs

  • Perform minor repairs including light bulb replacement, door hardware, touch-up painting, caulking, and basic carpentry

  • Log all maintenance requests and track completion using the parish work order system; report recurring or major issues to the Business Manager

  • Escort and monitor vendors and contractors on-site; verify that all work is completed to satisfactory standards

  • Ensure all mechanical rooms, storage areas, and utility spaces are organized and accessible



Church & Liturgical Space Readiness


  • Open and secure the church building for daily Mass, weekend liturgies, sacramental celebrations, and special events

  • Coordinate setup and teardown for parish events, funerals, weddings, and seasonal liturgical celebrations in cooperation with ministry leaders and staff

  • Monitor HVAC settings and lighting for appropriate occupancy comfort and energy efficiency

  • Ensure the sanctuary, narthex, restrooms, and common areas are clean and presentable at all times

  • Coordinate with volunteer janitorial staff on cleaning schedules and standards; inspect work quality and address deficiencies



School Building Support


  • Respond promptly to maintenance and facilities requests from the Principal and school staff

  • Plan and execute maintenance tasks during school breaks to minimize disruption to the academic program

  • Support school safety and emergency preparedness by maintaining clear egress routes, functioning emergency lighting, and up-to-date fire extinguisher certifications



Rectory Coordination


  • Receive and process maintenance requests from the Pastor and Rectory residents in a timely and discreet manner

  • Coordinate with appropriate vendors for rectory repairs and upkeep; log all work consistently

  • Ensure the rectory exterior is maintained in keeping with the overall campus standards



Grounds & Exterior


  • Monitor the condition of all exterior areas including parking lots, walkways, landscaping, and exterior lighting

  • Coordinate with the landscaping vendor on seasonal schedules and special needs; report irrigation or drainage issues

  • Manage storm cleanup and coordinate timely response to weather-related facility concerns



Safety & Compliance


  • Perform regular safety walkthroughs and document findings; elevate concerns to the Business Manager promptly

  • Maintain current records of fire extinguisher inspections, emergency exit lighting tests, and other routine certifications

  • Ensure all campus spaces meet applicable safety codes and diocesan facility standards



Qualifications


Education & Experience


  • Experience in a school, church, or institutional setting preferred

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English required; bilingual ability in Spanish or another language is a plus



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • Working knowledge of basic building systems and ability to perform minor repairs independently

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities across a multi-building campus

  • Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with clergy, staff, parish and vendors

  • Ability to operate standard maintenance tools and equipment safely

  • Demonstrated respect for and commitment to the mission and values of the Catholic Church



Licenses & Other Requirements


  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required

  • Must successfully complete Diocese of Charleston Safe Environment (VIRTUS) training prior to hire

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and perform physical tasks in varying indoor and outdoor conditions



Working Conditions


  • Flexible schedule to provide for early mornings, evenings, and weekends to support liturgical events and parish activities

  • On-call availability required for after-hours facility emergencies

  • Work is performed across the full campus including the church, school buildings, rectory, and grounds



Diocese of Charleston Requirements

This position is subject to all applicable Diocese of Charleston personnel policies, including the Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Safe Environment Program. The Facilities Manager is expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the Catholic identity and mission of St. John Neumann Church and School.
