Job summary

North Carolina State University is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician – Contributing to join the Building Maintenance & Operations team. The role supports routine maintenance, operations, and repairs across building systems on NC State’s campuses, with hands-on experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, steam, and related trades.

You will work with experienced mechanics to perform preventive maintenance, assist with repairs and installations, and document readings and time spent on tasks

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; or demonstrated competency to perform the work.
• Optional guidelines: experience in the trade areas related to the assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
• Preferred qualifications: relevant experience in the maintenance or building system trades.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic maintenance, preventive maintenance, and repairs across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, steam, and other building systems.
• Assist higher-level mechanics with maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, installations, and other assigned work.
• Operate and maintain the basic tools and equipment used in assigned trades; follow proper procedures and document readings.
• Follow preventive maintenance work orders and maintenance requests, completing assigned work accurately and within established timelines.
• Lift, carry, and maneuver materials weighing 60–90 pounds, with or without accommodations, and work in confined spaces.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public, following instructions.
