Job summary

Heights Libraries is seeking a hands-on Facilities Maintenance Technician to keep library buildings and grounds safe, clean, and running smoothly. You’ll perform routine repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance across locations, with growth into more specialized building systems over time.

From day one, you’ll handle carpentry, painting, basic plumbing/electrical fixes, custodial tasks, and grounds care, with travel between sites as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 1 year of general maintenance, custodial, construction, or related hands-on field.
• Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, and basic maintenance equipment.
• Valid Ohio driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Able to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs., work on ladders, and in varying weather conditions.
• Reliable, self-directed, and able to prioritize workload.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine building maintenance and repairs (carpentry, painting, basic plumbing and electrical).
• Inspect facilities and grounds for safety and maintenance needs.
• Complete preventative maintenance on building equipment on schedule.
• Provide custodial support as needed to keep spaces clean.
• Travel between library locations to complete work.

Job description

Heights Libraries is looking for a hands‑on, reliable Facilities Maintenance Technician to help keep our library buildings and grounds safe, clean, and running smoothly. You'll handle day-to-day repairs, preventative maintenance, and general upkeep across our locations — with the chance to build specialized skills in building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and building automation) over time.

This is a great fit for someone with solid general maintenance or trades experience who wants steady, full‑time hourly work with room to grow into more specialized facilities systems work — and potentially toward a future Facilities Manager role.

Core Responsibilities (Day One)

These are the everyday tasks you'll be doing from the start:

• Perform routine building maintenance and repairs: general carpentry, painting, furniture assembly/repair, and basic plumbing and electrical fixes.
• Conduct routine inspections of facilities and grounds to catch maintenance needs and safety concerns early.
• Complete preventative maintenance tasks on a set schedule for building equipment and systems.
• Provide custodial support as needed to keep library spaces clean and welcoming.
• Handle grounds maintenance: landscaping, snow removal, ice control, and seasonal upkeep.
• Track and log completed work orders, inspections, and maintenance activity.
• Help maintain stock of maintenance supplies and equipment.
• Travel between library locations as needed to complete work.
• Pitch in on emergency response for facility issues, weather events, or safety concerns.

Growth Responsibilities (Build Over Time)

You won't be expected to walk in an expert in these — we'll support training and certification as you grow into them:

• Monitor and troubleshoot building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, security, and building automation software).
• Assist with facility improvement and renovation projects, including vendor and contractor coordination.
• Support low‑pressure boiler system operation and maintenance.
• Help prepare purchase orders and basic vendor/purchasing documentation.
• Coordinate with outside contractors and service providers for repairs and specialized work.

What You Bring

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 1 year of experience in general maintenance, custodial work, construction, or a related hands‑on field.
• Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, and basic maintenance/groundskeeping equipment.
• Able to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs., work on ladders above 20 ft., and work in varying weather conditions.
• Valid Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Reliable, self‑directed, and comfortable prioritizing your own workload day to day.

Preferred (Not Required to Apply)

• Trade certification or coursework in a building trade (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.).
• Experience with building automation systems or commercial/public facility operations.
• Experience with low‑pressure boiler systems.
• Experience in a library, school, government, or nonprofit facility.

This role is a real pathway toward a future Facilities Manager position. As you build experience and certifications in building systems, you'll have the opportunity to take on more advanced projects and responsibilities.

Schedule & Physical Demands

• Work is performed indoors and outdoors across all Heights Libraries locations.
• Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends, and emergency response.

Hourly Pay Range: $20.90 – $26.15 per hour

Starting pay is based on qualifications, experience, and certifications.
