Purpose of Position

The Facilities Maintenance Plumber serves as an essential member of the Methodist University Facilities Maintenance team and is responsible for maintaining safe, dependable, and efficient plumbing systems throughout campus. This position supports the university community by ensuring facilities remain operational, well-maintained, and prepared to support students, faculty, staff, and guests.

The role requires more than completing repairs. A Facilities Maintenance Plumber is expected to take ownership of assigned areas, identify concerns before they become failures, protect university resources, and contribute to a department culture built on pride, professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Plumbing Systems Maintenance

Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install campus plumbing systems including:

• Domestic hot and cold water systems
• Sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems
• Natural gas piping
• Pumps and circulation systems
• Valves , regulators, and controls
• Water heaters and storage tanks
• Commercial kitchen plumbing systems
• Laboratory plumbing equipment
• Mechanical room piping systems
• Repair and replace faucets and fixtures, toilets and urinals, flush valves, mixing valves, drinking fountains and bottle fillers, shower systems, drain components, piping, and fittings.
• Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install tankless water heating systems, including associated controls, venting, recirculation systems, and manufacturer-recommended preventative maintenance.
• Participate in the department's rotating after-hours emergency call schedule and respond to plumbing and facility emergencies as required.

Preventative Maintenance Expectations

The Facilities Maintenance Plumber is expected to support a proactive maintenance approach by:

• Performing scheduled inspections of plumbing systems and equipment.
• Identifying potential issues before equipment failure occurs.
• Documenting deficiencies and corrective actions.
• Maintaining accurate equipment history and records.
• Recommending improvements that increase reliability and efficiency.
• Supporting development and improvement of department SOPs.

Facilities Team Expectations

Every member of Facilities Maintenance is expected to:

• Take ownership of the campus and treat facilities as if they were their own.
• Perform repairs correctly, not just temporarily.
• Maintain clean and organized work areas.
• Communicate professionally with students, faculty, staff, and coworkers.
• Assist other trades when needed.
• Look beyond the original request and identify additional issues.
• Represent the department with professionalism and pride.
• Participate in the department's rotating on-call schedule and respond to emergency maintenance situations outside normal working hours as required.

Cross-Departmental Support

The Facilities Maintenance Plumber is expected to work collaboratively with all Facilities Maintenance personnel to accomplish departmental goals and support the University's mission. While plumbing is the employee's primary area of responsibility, this position will:

• Assist HVAC, electrical, carpentry, painting, locksmith, grounds, and general maintenance personnel with projects and repairs as workload and operational needs require.
• Support campus events, special projects, emergency response, and weather-related operations.
• Share knowledge and assist coworkers in resolving maintenance issues while promoting teamwork and continuous improvement.
• Maintain flexibility in daily assignments to meet changing departmental priorities and provide the highest level of service to the University community.
• Contribute to a positive team environment by demonstrating professionalism, cooperation, and a willingness to assist wherever needed.

Safety Responsibilities

• Follow OSHA standards and university safety policies.
• Practice proper lockout/tagout procedures.
• Maintain safe job sites.
• Use tools and equipment correctly.
• Report unsafe conditions immediately.
• Ensure repairs meet applicable plumbing codes and standards.

QualificationsRequired Skills and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 3-5 years of plumbing, maintenance, or related trade experience preferred.
• Strong troubleshooting and repair skills.
• Knowledge of commercial plumbing systems.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to prioritize emergency and routine work.
• Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and computerized maintenance/work order (CMMS) systems.
• Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Plumbing license or certification.
• Backflow prevention certification.
• Experience maintaining and troubleshooting commercial tankless water heating systems.
• Institutional or campus maintenance experience.
• Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs.
