Job summary

Wilberforce University is seeking a Certified Plumber to install, maintain and repair plumbing systems across campus, including dorms, classrooms, athletic facilities, and administrative buildings.

You will respond to routine and emergency maintenance requests, diagnose issues, perform repairs, and work collaboratively with the Facilities team and external contractors to ensure compliance with codes and University standards.

Qualifications

Job Summary

The Plumber is responsible for the installation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of plumbing systems and related equipment throughout Wilberforce University. This position supports the University’s academic, administrative, residential, athletic, and common-use facilities and helps ensure that plumbing systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes and University standards.The Plumber will respond to routine and emergency maintenance requests, identify plumbing issues, complete repairs, and work collaboratively with the Facilities team and outside contractors when specialized services are required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Install, repair, maintain, and troubleshoot plumbing systems, fixtures, pipes, valves, drains, water lines, and related equipment.
• Repair or replace faucets, toilets, sinks, water heaters, pumps, valves, pipes, and other plumbing components.
• Diagnose leaks, clogs, low water pressure, drainage problems, and other plumbing issues.
• Respond promptly to emergency plumbing situations, including leaks, flooding, burst pipes, and other conditions that may cause damage to University property.
• Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance of plumbing systems.
• Clear clogged drains, toilets, sewer lines, and other drainage systems using appropriate tools and equipment.
• Perform repairs in residence halls, academic buildings, administrative offices, athletic facilities, and other University properties.
• Assist with installation and renovation projects involving plumbing systems.
• Coordinate with outside plumbing contractors when work requires specialized equipment, permits, or services beyond the University’s internal capabilities.
• Monitor plumbing-related work performed by contractors to ensure work is completed properly and in accordance with University expectations.
• Maintain accurate records of repairs, work orders, materials used, and equipment serviced.
• Follow all applicable building, plumbing, health, safety, and environmental regulations.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow established workplace safety procedures.
• Communicate with faculty, staff, students, and visitors in a courteous and professional manner while performing work.
• Assist other Facilities/Maintenance staff with general maintenance duties when needed.
• Participate in emergency response, after-hours, weekend, or on-call assignments as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities/Maintenance or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in commercial, institutional, or residential plumbing.
• Demonstrated knowledge of plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
• Ability to pass required background and employment screening.

Preferred Qualifications

• Journeyman Plumber license or other applicable plumbing certification.
• Experience working in a college/university, commercial, institutional, or large residential environment.
• Experience working with preventative maintenance programs and computerized work-order systems.
• Knowledge of applicable Ohio plumbing and building codes.
• Experience with emergency plumbing response.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working in confined or difficult-to-access areas. The employee may be required to lift and carry plumbing equipment, tools, and materials and work in varying temperatures and conditions.

Work Environment

Work is performed throughout the University campus, including academic buildings, administrative facilities, residence halls, athletic facilities, mechanical areas, and outdoor areas. The position may involve exposure to water, sewage, chemicals, dust, dirt, noise, and other conditions commonly associated with plumbing and maintenance work. The position may require evening, weekend, holiday, emergency, and on-call work based on University needs.
