Job description

This position announcement will be used to fill a full-time, permanent, safety-sensitive Facilities Maintenance Mechanic II (Represented) position in the Department of Detention Facilities with Anne Arundel County Government.
The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic II position is part of a proficiency classification series. This means that an employee could advance to a higher level position in the series by meeting approved criteria defined by the Department.
This is skilled journeyman level work in one or more of the mechanical or building trades.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work involves responsibility for the independent performance of a variety of skilled mechanical and building trades work in the care and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. Work includes activities related to complex and heavy equipment and intricate building facilities. Work may include supervision of a helper or a small crew of subordinate maintenance mechanics or unskilled workers. Work is performed independently within established policies, procedures, and acceptable trade techniques, and is reviewed by superiors through observation, conferences, and results obtained.

Performs skilled carpentry, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical, roofing, sheet metal, masonry, painting, and decorating or related building, grounds, and equipment maintenance and repair work.
Supervises a small crew of unskilled and semi-skilled workers.
Leads and participates in large scale and routine preventive maintenance procedures; monitors machinery and equipment operations; performs adjustments and repairs, including major overhauls.
Procures and installs replacement parts and fixtures; maintains and repairs lawn and grounds maintenance equipment.
Installs and moves partitions, doors, shelves, and other non-structural fixtures; repairs and maintains parking facilities.
Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.
Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, and tools of one or more of the building and mechanical trades.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions peculiar to various building and mechanical trades.
Ability to understand and work from complex sketches, penciled layouts, plans, blueprints, and specifications.
Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others.
Ability to prepare and maintain moderately complex records and to make reports.
Skill in the use of a wide range of tools and equipment of the building and mechanical trades.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or vocational school.
EXPERIENCE: One (1) or more years at the journeyman level in one or more of the building and mechanical trades; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.

NOTE: The selection process includes a comprehensive background investigation and medical and psychological evaluation.
NOTE: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance and Alcohol testing.
NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in HVAC, Electrical, and/or Plumbing.
NOTE: This position involves daily inmate contact.
NOTE: Upon appointment, selected candidates are required to successfully complete the Maryland Police And Correctional Training Academy to maintain permanent employment status.
