Job summary

SDSU Alumni is seeking a skilled Facilities Maintenance Mechanic at the Brawley campus. In this full-time role, you will perform advanced maintenance, repair, and preventative work across campus facilities.

Position Summary

San Diego State University Imperial Valley – Brawley Campus is seeking a skilled and versatile Facilities Maintenance Mechanic to perform advanced maintenance, repair, renovation, and preventive maintenance work across campus facilities. This role supports the safe, efficient operation of university buildings, infrastructure, and mechanical systems through hands‑on work in multiple trades and facility support functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facility Maintenance & Repair
    • Perform skilled maintenance, repair, and renovation work involving mechanical, electrical, plumbing, architectural, and steam systems.
    • Troubleshoot facility issues, respond to service requests, and perform repairs to infrastructure, drainage systems, fencing, roadways, and campus ground features.
    • Coordinate maintenance projects, monitor contractor work, maintain records, and support project planning and material procurement.
    • Provide direction to student assistants and support special events, vehicle maintenance coordination, and campus operations.
  • Preventive Maintenance
    • Perform scheduled preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building automation systems.
    • Operate, test, install, and repair equipment while maintaining computerized maintenance records and work logs.
    • Monitor system performance and ensure compliance with maintenance schedules and safety standards.
    • Assist skilled trades staff with complex maintenance and renovation projects.
  • Emergency Response, Shop Operations & General Support
    • Respond to emergency service calls, urgent repairs, and safety‑related issues to restore facility operations and mitigate risks.
    • Maintain tools, equipment, inventory, and a safe work environment while supporting campus maintenance projects, special events, and Facilities Services operations.
Position Information
  • Full‑time, benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • Non‑exempt under FLSA and eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard work hours: Monday – Friday, 1:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., subject to operational needs.
  • Work location: SDSU‑Brawley campus.
Department Summary

SDSU Imperial Valley is an integral division of SDSU located 120 miles east of the San Diego Campus. The Brawley location provides laboratory, classroom, and research facilities and is surrounded by rich agricultural fields. The campus includes five classrooms, a video‑conference capable classroom, and a computer classroom.

Education and Experience

Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey‑level skills in a mechanical or facilities/building trade, or equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities and systems mechanic that demonstrates journey‑level skills equivalent to an apprenticeship program.

Key Qualifications
  • Ability to lift and transport equipment, material and supplies up to 50 pounds without assistance (over 50 pounds with assistance).
  • Working knowledge of computerized maintenance and building automation systems.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems and renovations.
  • Journey‑level experience in one trade and strong mechanical trade skills to perform duties independently and safely.
  • Experience estimating costs, time and materials for maintenance, repair and renovation work.
  • Experience working in an academic setting preferred.
  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish preferred.
Licenses and Certifications

Valid California Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive compensation aligned with department budget and equity guidelines.

Salary
  • Initial step placement not expected to exceed Step 7 ($6,031 /month).
  • Internal applicants follow the Teamsters Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,355 – $7,801 /month (Step 1–20).
  • Future increases subject to contract negotiations.
