Job summary

The Indianapolis Zoo is seeking a Facilities Manager to lead a maintenance team and ensure our facilities, habitats, and guest areas operate safely and reliably. This hands-on leadership role covers daily work, preventative maintenance, and coordinating with departments to keep buildings, exhibits and vehicles in top condition.

You will manage trades like electrical, HVAC, plumbing and carpentry, oversee safety compliance, and respond to emergencies with weekend or on-call availability as needed.

Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED; trade certifications preferred.
  • Five or more years of facilities management experience in trades like HVAC, electrical, plumbing.
  • Knowledge of carpentry, welding, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems.
  • Experience with fleet repair and maintenance and reading blueprints.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools and operate heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • GIS and CAD experience is a plus.
  • Indiana driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days; forklift certification ability.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise and support Facilities employees, including hiring, training, scheduling, coaching and performance management.
  • Prioritize work orders based on urgency and needs.
  • Oversee preventative maintenance programs and schedules per manufacturer recommendations.
  • Manage third-party service contracts and coordinate contracted work.
  • Support facility projects, equipment replacements, upgrades and refurbishments.
  • Maintain inventories of facility assets, supplies and materials.
  • Ensure safety compliance with USDA, IOSHA and PPE standards.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Compliance and Safety on procedures and inspections.
  • Coordinate projects across Zoo departments and manage access, closures and timelines.
  • Provide strong leadership and creative problem solving during challenges.
