Job Description - Summary

Student worker to assist Facilities Department with maintaining landscape and planters on campus.

* Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours to qualify for FWS Program. This is a part-time opportunity. Students may work up to 15 hours per week, depending on their unmet need on their FASFA.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Federal Work Study is federally funded need-based aid to assist students with the cost of attending college. This listing is intended for students attending Surry Community College during the 2025-2026 academic year with need determined by the federal government. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Care and maintain garden beds and planters on campus.
  • Weed beds and planters on a routine basis.
  • Fertilize, prune, mulch, etc., as needed.
  • Sow grass.
  • Follow safety guidelines and protocols.
  • Work with multiple supervisors.
  • Assist with construction and implementation of future grounds/landscape changes.
General Qualifications
  • Student must be punctual and have knowledge of plants and plant care.
Required Qualifications
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Trustworthy.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to use garden tools and equipment (rake, shovel, edger, weed eater).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Horticulture background.
  • Understanding of grounds safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Experience with grounds equipment such as tractors, pressure washers, edgers, etc.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Stand for long periods.
  • Lift heavy objects.
  • Bend for long periods.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Pay rate: $14.00/hr.
