Job summary

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is seeking a part-time Facilities Generalist to join the facility operations team. The role covers building and exhibit maintenance, event setup and takedown, and care of the building and grounds.

The position offers opportunities to learn a variety of skills and grow with the team, with potential expansion of responsibilities as capacity allows, while supporting DEAI initiatives and a collaborative culture.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years’ experience in industrial or large public facility housekeeping, grounds, or maintenance.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and grow.
  • Proven track of reliability and dependability.
  • Must be able to work some holidays, nights, and weekends when scheduled.
  • Must be able to vary normal work schedule, as needed, to provide adequate coverage for museum operations.
  • Operational knowledge of and experience using commercial cleaning, landscaping equipment, or maintenance tools preferred.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and methods of building and campus maintenance and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance, cleaning, and care of the building and campus.
  • Assists with set-up, transportation and take down of equipment for museum building events, programs and rentals (including, tables, chairs, banners, pipe and drape, etc.). Ensures set-ups are completed on time and accurately.
  • Assists with gathering and transporting trash/waste on campus though the use of carts and designated museum vehicles. Assists with outside grounds maintenance including snow removal and campus cleanup.
  • Conducts thorough daily inspections of designated areas of the building and outdoor spaces, reporting any concerns to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
  • Works alongside skilled labor to assist with basic building and exhibit maintenance and repairs such as painting, plumbing, HVAC, electrical and carpentry work. May be asked to assist with repairs and cleaning requiring the use of a lift. Training will be provided to ensure safe operation.
  • Assists with the regular care and maintenance of the historic carousel.
  • Safely and efficiently operates a variety of handheld power equipment that may include: hand tools and landscaping equipment.

OVERVIEW:

The part-time Facilities Generalist for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is a member of the facility operations team. The generalist performs building/exhibit maintenance, participates in event set-up and take-down, and assists with general cleaning and care of the building and grounds. The incumbent plays a first tier role and is responsible for building maintenance and upkeep.

The facility operations team utilizes a tiered, shared resources based facilities management approach rooted in cross-training and teamwork. The generalist is afforded opportunities to learn and practice a variety of skills and trades, with the potential for growth through added responsibilities and increased knowledge-base, budget and time permitting.

REPORTS TO: Manager of Implementation and Maintenance

The Children’s Museum is open six to seven days per week. The outdoor Sports Legends Experience is open from mid-March through October. The Facilities Generalist may be required to work a flexible and varying schedule, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Two (2) years’ experience in industrial or large public facility housekeeping, grounds, or maintenance.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and grow.
  • Proven track of reliability and dependability.

  • Must be able to vary normal work schedule, as needed, in order to provide adequate coverage for the museum operations.
  • Operational knowledge of and experience using commercial cleaning, landscaping equipment, or maintenance tools preferred.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and methods of building and campus maintenance and operations.
  • Must possess the analytical skills to use telephones, keep accurate and up to date written records, and possess some knowledge of computer systems, and two-way radio systems.

*Special consideration given to those applicants who are multi-lingual.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to view computer monitor, facilities related documents and make observations of museum, visitors, and other equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate extensively via telephone, one-on-one conversations, and two-way radios with visitors, staff and museum guests.
  • Must be able to able to respond to on-call alerts, as needed.
  • Must be able to kneel, sit, or stand for prolonged periods of time. Efficiently traverse the building and campus multiple times daily; lift heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.), tolerate dust in the indoor environment and extreme temperatures and humidity in the outdoor environment.
  • Must also be able to accomplish both low and high cleaning of the building (ground level to seventy feet high).
