BISSELL, Inc. in Grand Rapids, MI is seeking a Facilities General Assistant to help maintain the cleanliness, appearance, functionality, and safety of company buildings and grounds.

You will support daily facility operations through inspections, maintenance, cleaning, groundskeeping, inventory organization, event support, and exceptional customer service to employees, visitors, and customers.   • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Overview

The Facilities General Assistant is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, appearance, functionality, and safety of company buildings, grounds, conference rooms, common areas, and outdoor amenities. This position supports daily facility operations through routine inspections, preventive maintenance, cleaning, groundskeeping, inventory organization, event support, and customer service, helping ensure that employees, visitors, and customers experience a clean, safe, professional, and welcoming environment.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct routine building, facility, and site inspections to identify maintenance, safety, and appearance concerns (e.g., door hardware, exit/emergency lighting, interior and exterior conditions).
  • Respond off hours and weekends as needed for building emergencies or to complete necessary work that otherwise could not be completed during normal business hours.
  • Perform weekly conference room inspections, checking chair cleanliness and hardware, verifying tables are clean and properly arranged, and ensuring rooms are organized and presentation-ready; report damaged furniture or equipment.
  • Inspect and operate the warehouse floor scrubber.
  • Inspect and maintain outdoor patios, sidewalks, and building entrances daily, including debris and litter removal, furniture arrangement and safety checks, trash removal, and surface cleaning.
  • Place and remove entrance mats based on weather conditions.
  • Conduct weekly inspections of walking trails and pathways.
  • Maintain dog treat and dog waste stations, including monitoring and rotating inventory (FIFO), restocking supplies, and maintaining cleanliness.
  • Support seasonal and weather-related facility preparations, including storm debris removal, seasonal outdoor amenity setup/teardown, and landscaping appearance support.
  • Maintain clean and orderly work environment. Assist with facility department inventory management, including organizing maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment storage areas, and supporting inventory audits and restocking efforts.
  • Support event and meeting setup, including arranging tables and chairs, assisting with conference room reconfigurations, applying window and floor appliques and returning spaces to standard layouts after events.
  • Perform light maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, installing signage, completing minor repairs, and adjusting furniture and equipment.
  • Provide housekeeping support, including spot cleaning common areas, addressing spill incidents, and maintaining breakrooms and shared spaces.
  • Escort and assist vendors and contractors, monitor completion of assigned work, and report contractor-related concerns.
  • Follow facility safety procedures, utilize proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), identify and report unsafe conditions, and assist with emergency preparedness activities.
  • Provide courteous, prompt, and professional customer service to employees, visitors, and customers.
  • Support Food Service and Café operations with equipment PM’s and general repair of kitchen and café related equipment including but not limited to changing water filters and ice machine maintenance. Act as a contact for outside equipment support vendors.
  • Respond, complete, and follow up on facility work orders.
  • Be able to safely operate company vehicles, including motorized utility vehicles, on public roads for errands or for transporting associates or visitors.
  • Other duties as assigned in support of the general business and day to day operations.
Qualifications
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
  • Strong attention to detail and thoroughness in completing inspections and maintenance tasks.
  • Reliability and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritize assigned tasks and follow through on their completion in a timely manner.

  • Proactive, solutions-oriented approach to facility upkeep and operational efficiency.
  • Have competency with computer software such as Excel, Word, Teams and Outlook
  • Must have valid drivers license with no felony or misdemeanors on driving record.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Previous experience in facilities, custodial, groundskeeping, warehouse, or maintenance operations.
  • Experience conducting inspections and maintaining inventories.
  • Familiarity with basic building systems and facility operations.
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate facility equipment and tools including but not limited to powered landscaping tools, powered and non powered hand tools, and ladders.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for minor repairs and hardware maintenance.
