Overview
Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Facilities Engineer or Principal Facilities Engineer to support our Armament Systems Business Unit located in Elk River, MN. Armament Systems specializes in the development and production of Ammunition, Guns and Precision Guidance Ordinance. This role supports 1st shift operations on a 4/10 schedule.
Our Elk River site consists of a 3,200-acre campus with over 20 active buildings, supporting development, manufacturing and testing for Northrop Grumman’s Defense Systems Division. Our Manufacturing Engineering team focuses on continuously improving, supporting, and maintaining manufacturing activities for Medium Caliber Ammunition and Warhead production.
Responsibilities
- Plans, designs and oversees the reconfiguration, maintenance, and alteration of equipment, machinery, buildings, structures, and other facilities. Gathers and reviews data concerning facility or equipment specifications, restrictions, required completion date, and construction feasibility. Coordinates with architecture/engineering firms to develop design criteria and prepare layout and detail drawings. Prepares bid sheets and contracts for construction and facilities acquisition. Reviews and estimates design costs including equipment, installation, labor, materials, preparation, and related costs. Inspects or directs the inspection of construction and installation progress to ensure conformance to drawings, specifications, and schedules.
- Review critical facility infrastructure such as HVAC, lighting, compressed air, communications, etc., and partner with internal maintenance staff and external contractors to develop preventative maintenance plans to improve reliability.
- Develop strategic replacement plans for outdated equipment to address excessive maintenance, energy efficiency, and consistency of equipment across the site.
- Assist Engineering with layout or design changes to existing structures or construction of new structures, including navigation of building codes and permits, and adherence to internal hazardous operations/explosive safety standards.
- Develop plans to remove old unused structures and equipment and plans for replacement to meet evolving business needs.
- Collaborate with Engineering and Maintenance to review or establish new preventative maintenance for all critical process equipment, including critical spare parts lists, to improve reliability and response times.
- Assist in safety or facility-related actions and improvements that may impact building or site infrastructure.
- Engage the Environment Health & Safety Team early in project planning to ensure environmental compliance, safety considerations, permits and review processes are followed.
- Partner with environmental staff to identify and implement sustainability projects to protect natural areas or decrease environmental impacts such as energy use, air emissions, or waste generation.
- Collaborate with vendors on projects, obtain quotes, and escort onto site as needed.
- This position is on a 4-10s schedule: 6am to 4:30pm, Monday-Thursday for the first 6 months, then Tuesday-Friday 6am to 4:30pm shift.
Note: This position may be filled at Level 2 or Level 3 salary grade depending on the candidate’s education and/or years of experience.
Basic Qualifications
Facilities Engineer Level 2
- Bachelor of Science in a STEM discipline plus 2 years of Facilities Engineering experience in a manufacturing setting, or Master’s degree with 0 years of experience
- Experience with facilities infrastructure including HVAC, lighting, compressed air, communications, etc.
- Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
Facilities Engineer Level 3 (Principal)
- Bachelor of Science in a STEM discipline plus 5 years of Facilities Engineering experience in a manufacturing setting, or Master’s degree plus 3 years of experience
- Experience with facilities infrastructure including HVAC, lighting, compressed air, communications, etc.
- Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience designing and maintaining energetic areas and knowledge of energetics
- Experience with AutoCAD to update master sitewide maps for changes to buildings, roads, culverts, fencing, wells, septic systems, propane tanks, etc., and updates to building drawings to capture construction details, electrical classifications, layout and capabilities
Salary and Benefits
Salary Range: $77,600.00 - $116,400.00; Salary Range 2: $95,800.00 - $143,600.00. The above ranges are general guidelines. Base salary offers consider the scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate experience, education, skills, and market conditions. Overtime, shift differential, and discretionary bonuses may be available. Annual bonuses reward individual contributions and company results. Employees in VP/Director roles may be eligible for Long-Term Incentives.
