Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a part-time Facilities Engineer II to operate and maintain building mechanical systems in a hospital setting. The role includes 24 hours per week with 8-hour second shifts on Fridays and Saturdays and an additional weekday shift as needed.

The candidate will monitor power plant equipment such as boilers, chillers, and related systems, perform safety checks, and execute preventive maintenance to ensure safe occupant spaces and reliable operation.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-3 years building maintenance experience.
  • HVAC/R trade school certification or equivalent.
  • Licensed as a Stationary Engineer or able to obtain within 1 year.
  • Valid driver's license with driving abstract.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and assists in maintaining and repairing all power plant equipment with minor supervision.
  • Monitors engineering systems and takes emergency actions as necessary.
  • Operates high pressure boilers and related equipment including chillers and energy systems.
  • Performs safety checks, repairs, and preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Cleans and paints equipment and piping in power plant and mechanical rooms.
  • Performs chemical analyses and manages chemical balances in systems.
  • Responds to plant emergencies and to service requests with troubleshooting and documentation.
  • Performs scheduled maintenance following regulatory protocols.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent
HVAC/R trade school certification or equivalent

Job Description

**This part-time role is scheduled for 24 hours per week (48 hours per pay period) and may vary based on operational needs. In most cases, the schedule includes:

  • 8-hour second shifts on Fridays and Saturdays on 2nd shift.
  • 8 additional weekday hours, either split into shorter shifts or one full day **

The Facilities Engineer II reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

  • As a licensed operating engineer, operates and maintains building mechanical systems and equipment. Power Plant equipment includes high pressure boilers, chillers, and medical air compressors. The goals are to operate the equipment safely, efficiently, and reliably with the minimal occurrences of unscheduled shutdowns. In addition, to provide comfortable condition and safe occupant ambient space.

Responsibilities:

  • Operates and assists in maintaining and repairing all power plant equipment with minor supervision. Monitors other engineering systems and to take emergency actions as necessary.
  • Operates high pressure boilers and related equipment. Which includes chillers, cooling towers, domestic hot water heating system, water heating system, generators, electrical switchgear, energy management system.
  • Properly performs safety checks on plant equipment. Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Cleans and paints equipment, piping, and associated accessories in power plant and mechanical rooms.
  • Chemically analyzes boiler, chiller, cooling tower and all closed loop systems.
  • Performs chemical analysis test and adds the correct amount of chemicals to keep a prescribed balance in boiler, cooling tower and closed loops.
  • Changes and disposes of chemical drums properly and uses proper safety equipment while working with chemicals. Understands the importance of chemical balance in all systems.
  • Responds to plant emergencies and knows location of firefighting equipment.
  • Responds to service requests and performs problem assessment, troubleshooting, correction, and documentation.
  • Performs scheduled maintenance and inspections in accordance with organizational and regulatory protocols, policies, and standards.
  • Operates facility equipment and systems on a routine and as needed basis in a safe and efficient manner.
  • May assist contractors/vendors with repairs, maintenance, and construction.
Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2-3 years relevant building maintenance experience
  • Technical training in maintenance field; HVAC/R trade school certifiction or equivalent
  • Licensed as a Stationary Engineer OR the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
  • Valid driver's license (must provide Driving Abstract)

Preferred:

  • Hospital or military experience
  • One year training in Boiler Maintenance
