Job summary

Connecticut Convention Center seeks a Facility Engineer to maintain all assets and equipment across the convention center and Adriaens Landing. The role requires coordinating with the Engineering team to complete repairs and preventative maintenance, while following safety guidelines.

Flexibility for on-call emergencies and a willingness to work varied hours are essential. Responsibilities include supervising contractors, inspecting facilities, and ensuring energy efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Maintenance experience in a convention center or similar venue.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends/holidays.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license.
  • Forklift and aerial lift certifications are a plus and training is available.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain all Connecticut Convention Center and Adriaens Landing assets to acceptable quality standards.
  • Respond to emergencies and be on call 24/7.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC, lighting, plumbing, kitchen equipment, painting and carpentry.
  • Coordinate with Engineering leadership to complete projects on spec and within timelines.
  • Follow safety and PPE guidelines as required.
  • Oversee outside contractors when professional repairs are needed.
  • Attend meetings and maintain organized work and storage areas.
  • Ensure cleanliness and proper operation of all equipment and facilities.

Job description

This position is responsible for maintaining all the Connecticut Convention Center and Adriaens Landing assets to an acceptable quality standard.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Always provides professional and courteous guest service.

Responds to emergency situations and is prepared to assist as needed and is on call 24/7.

Working varying hours with limited notice during snowstorms for snow removal as required

Coordinates with the Chief and Assistant Chief of Engineering, Engineer Supervisor to ensure projects are completed according to specifications and allotted timelines.

Follow building safety and OSHA guidelines and use proper PPE as required.

Handle repairs and preventative maintenance to include HVAC, lighting, plumbing, kitchen equipment, painting and carpentry and all relevant building, grounds and repairs related to facility/grounds assignments.

Conduct routine inspections of the premises and equipment.

Follows building guidelines for energy conservation standards for electrical, HVAC, and water utilities.

Ability to operate independently the convention center facilities operating software systems.

Overseeing outside retained contractors when professional repairs are necessary.

Attends weekly staff meetings and all meetings requested by the Chief and Assistant Chief of Engineering.

Ensures clean and organized work and storage areas.

Maintains cleanliness of all building and complex areas and areas assigned by the ownership (CRDA) and the General Manager.

Ensures all mechanized equipment and Engineer equipment in general is cleaned and always maintained after each use.

Requirements:
  • Maintenance experience in a convention center and meeting destination venue.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work at heights of more than 30 ft.
  • Ability to communicate via verbal, text, email in a positive and professional manner.
  • Be able to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Be a problem solver by using facts and personal judgement.
  • Be able to react quickly to emergency situations and make decisions that may involve a financial commitment or to safeguard the safety of others.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment.
  • Have a valid state issued driver’s license.
  • Forklift and aerial lift certification are a plus but will train if needed.
  • Basic computer skills for searching up manuals and parts as needed. Basic knowledge of Microsoft office.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machine breakdowns using all resources available.
  • Manage tasks and assignments as they occur on the property.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the facilities- HVAC, Fire suppression, Lighting systems and all other systems identified by the Chief and Assistant Chief of Engineering with the ability to operate all systems in an independent manner.
Skills
  • Proficiency in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to take apart equipment or devices to remove and replace defective parts, as necessary.
  • Ability to refer to and read blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as needed.
  • Multitasking while keeping an eye towards details and project completion.
  • Basic math skills including fractions and proportions.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • The ability to use a Bosun chair is a plus.
  • Forklift and aerial certification are a plus.
  • Troubleshooting abilities are a plus.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to lift 50lbs, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50lbs.
  • Standing, walking, or kneeling for extended periods of time as required.
  • Continued body movements such as climbing, crawling, twisting, and bending.
  • Ability to work on ladders, mechanized equipment, or scaffolding heights greater than 40ft and at times the entire height of the convention center building (110ft).
Environmental Conditions:
  • Approximately 75% of assigned work is indoors, while 25% of projects are outside.
  • Temperature ranges can vary with some work assignments (e.g., snow removal, working in a boiler room etc.).
  • Some areas of the building, or certain types of machinery, may cause/contain constant or intermittent loud noises or that may cause vibrations to the body.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Any other duties assigned by the Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer and Engineer Supervisor consistent with the functions, responsibilities, and role of the Facility Engineer.
