Job summary

South Metro Fire Rescue is seeking a Facilities Engineer to ensure safe, operational facilities and equipment across multiple buildings. The role covers electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, landscaping and related maintenance tasks.

Two levels exist: Engineer II and Journey Level with increasing independence and complexity, including coordinating with contractors and maintaining detailed records. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, issue diagnosis, and timely repairs, as well as

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED; trades certification preferred.
  • 3 years minimum of general building maintenance/repair experience.
  • Must have Colorado driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • CPR certification must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
  • Associate degree-equivalent coursework in a building maintenance trade preferred.
  • 4 years building maintenance/repair experience with journeyman-level in one trade.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance and repair on facility systems and equipment.
  • Inspect and diagnose issues; coordinate with outside contractors when needed.
  • Maintain records of repairs, maintenance schedules and costs.
  • Manage inventory of repair parts and support on-call maintenance tasks.
  • Attend trainings to stay updated on building systems and technologies.

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

The purpose of the Facilities Engineer is to ensure SMFR maintains safe and operational facilities and equipment by performing general repair, maintenance and inspections. This position performs work in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, landscaping and other building maintenance and equipment repair. The Facilities Engineer performs inspections, diagnoses problems, and repairs or coordinates repairs with outside contractors. Two levels of this position exist as outlined below.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Facilities Engineer II (General Level)
Performs general facilities maintenance and repair work involving building systems, equipment, and infrastructure. Assignments include routine and preventative maintenance, basic troubleshooting, inspections, and repairs to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, landscaping, carpentry, and building systems. Work is performed under general supervision, with more complex issues referred to higher-level staff. This classification is expected to develop proficiency across a broad range of facility maintenance functions.

Facilities Engineer I (Journey Level)
Performs the full range of journey-level facilities maintenance work and is distinguished by the ability to independently diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex building systems and equipment. Incumbents exercise independent judgment in prioritizing work, identifying root causes, and determining appropriate corrective actions. Work includes advanced maintenance and repair tasks, coordinating with outside contractors as needed, and serving as a technical resource for complex maintenance issues.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (The following statements are illustrative of the duties and responsibilities of the position and do not list every duty that may be required of the employee for this position. Performs or schedules emergency and routine repairs and preventative maintenance on all facility systems and equipment including HVAC systems, electrical systems, power generators, exhaust systems, gas powered and electrical landscaping equipment, irrigation systems, kitchen and laundry appliances, bay door operations systems and building structures including roofs, gutters, doors, drywall, and painting.

Performs maintenance and repair work on a variety of buildings, including fire stations, administrative offices, training facilities, and other owned and leased District facilities.

Receives and evaluates repair requests from line and staff personnel to determine if repairs should be performed in-house or through a contracted repair service. Oversees and inspects the work of contractors and outside vendors.

Documents repair request completion to include time requirements, repair/parts costs, and notification of completion to reporting parties.

Maintains detailed records for all facilities including repair records, preventative maintenance schedules and cost of repair.

Maintains an inventory of commonly used repair parts in a clean and orderly parts room.

Serves on committees related to equipment and facilities.

Assists with developing specifications for new equipment and orders replacement parts and equipment as needed.

Carries cell phone as required for on-call emergency maintenance and repairs.

Attends conferences, seminars, and classes to keep abreast of emerging building systems and technologies.

Performs other related maintenance and repair tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS (An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position is qualifying.)

Requires a High School Diploma or GED. Skilled Trades School Electrical, Plumbing or HVAC Certification is preferred.

Minimum of three (3) years of general building maintenance/mechanical repair experience.

Possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with SMFR’s Driving Records Policy.

Must obtain CPR certification within one (1) year of hire.

High School Diploma or GED is required. Advanced coursework in a building or

maintenance trade equivalent to an Associate degree is preferred.

Minimum of four (4) years of building maintenance/mechanical repair experience to include three (2) years of experience in a specific building trade (plumbing, electrical, HVAC) at the journeyman level.

Must possess and maintain at least one of the following licenses:

Possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with SMFR’s Driving Records Policy.

Must obtain CPR certification within one (1) year of hire.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of building/equipment mechanics, repair, and maintenance.

Advanced knowledge of building/equipment mechanics, repair, and maintenance to include specific Journey level knowledge in at least one building trade cited above (Required for Facilities Engineer II)

Skill in communicating and interacting with a broad range of people to effectively accomplish assigned tasks or projects.

Skill in mathematics as is necessary to conduct maintenance and repairs.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with SMFR employees, the public and outside contractors.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and to issue clear, concise verbal and/or written instructions to other employees.

Ability to work from schematics, drawings, blueprints, sketches, manuals, or verbal directions.

Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair a wide variety of building control systems andequipment.

Ability to use and maintain a variety of hand and shop tools and shop equipment.

Ability to use and operate a computerized records management system and office automation equipment to maintain records, parts, and inventory.

Ability to safely drive to and from District facilities.

Ability to handle multiple tasks and adhere to deadlines in stressful or difficult situations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general direction of the Facilities Supervisor and may receive direction from the Lead Facilities Engineer.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None.

EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS

Requires frequent use of equipment including personal computer (including various software packages, database, and spreadsheet programs), SMFR vehicles, mechanical/hand tools*, ladders and equipment necessary to repair and maintain District facilities and equipment, portable radios, calculators, telephones, facsimile machines, copy machines, printers, and other general office equipment.

  • *May be required to supply own hand tools.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

The essential duties of this job require heavy lifting. Heavy lifting is exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Visual and fine/gross motor skills enabling the safe operation of a variety of hand and shop tools, office equipment and vehicles, in normal as well as hazardous weather conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND GENERAL INFORMATION

The responsibilities of this job are performed in both an office environment and in the field. The office environment is climate-controlled. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Significant portions of the work are performed in the field and on construction sites. These environments present potential hazards such as slips, trips, falls, and exposure to noise found in construction and in the elements.
