Facilities Engineer. This position will support the Structural Heart business and will be based in Caguas, Puerto Rico. On‑site position.

The Opportunity
This position will provide support to our Medical Devices/Structural Heart business. Our medical devices help more than 10,000 people have healthier hearts, improve quality of life for thousands of people living with chronic pain and movement disorders, and liberate more than 500,000 people with diabetes from routine fingersticks. Our business purpose is to restore health and improve quality of life through the design and provision of device and management solutions for the treatment of structural heart disease.
This is an exempt role
As the Facilities Engineer, you will plan, design, and supervise the construction of new or existing facilities in support of Company goals by utilizing available resources in the most efficient and effective manner possible while complying with time and budget constraints. Projects range from small to mid sized and have moderate impact on overall company goals. Perform investigations and implement corrective actions in support of the Exception process for both moderate and major CAPAs affecting the facility. Document results per Abbott rubrics.
What You’ll Do
- Oversee the planning, design, construction, reconfiguration, maintenance, and alteration of equipment, machinery, buildings, structures, and other facilities.
- Plan and coordinate periodic shutdowns to service and maintain equipment, hurricane season preparation activities/planning.
- Schedule, coordinate, and plan preventative maintenance, repairs and services for facilities, equipment, systems and building.
- Lead and support facilities/maintenance projects to maximize efficiency and utilization of facilities and equipment.
- Maintain facilities operation including facilities equipment, area conditions, utilities, and amenities.
- Investigate unplanned events affecting facility operations and take appropriate corrective and preventive actions to preclude recurrence.
- Develop criteria and performance specifications for facilities and equipment required to meet unique operating requirements and building and safety codes.
- Assist in development and maintenance of short‑term and long‑term facility plans. May be responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and planning preventative maintenance for facilities, equipment, pest control services.
- Prepare bid sheets, scope of work and contracts for construction, maintenance and facilities services.
- Maintain updated plant, office and production equipment layouts/engineering drawings and ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
- Review and estimate design costs including equipment, installation, labor, materials, preparation, and other related costs.
- Follow diverse procedures and solve problems requiring consideration of many different approaches. Select solutions from alternatives using past experience.
- Execute emergency repairs to maintain site operations or area conditions.
- Determine own priorities and may deviate from established procedures, monitoring work results usually indirectly. Provide guidance on results expected and timeline.
- Prioritize tasks. Plan and coordinate activities pertaining to the facilities department.
- Make decisions on contracting, managing, and planning design, construction, and maintenance services for facilities and equipment.
Required Qualifications
- B.S. in Engineering.
- Minimum 2 years of related work experience with a good understanding of the specified functional area.
- Experience with cGMP and cGLP practices and projects preferred. Will perform this job in a quality system environment. Failure to adequately perform tasks can result in noncompliance with governmental regulations.
- Works on problems of significant scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors.
- Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
- Has a good knowledge of technical alternatives and a strong understanding of facilities and utilities systems and how they impact the environment.
The base pay for this position is $54,300.00 – $109,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
