Job description

A growing San Diego Medical Device company is moving to a newly built 20,000-square-foot R&D facility and seeking a manager to oversee Environmental Health & Safety and facilities operations. This manager will support facility relocation planning and and manage day-to-day operations at the new facility.

This role will primarily manage key vendors supporting Environmental Compliance and Workplace Safety & Risk Management. The ideal candidate will help maintain a safe, compliant, and well-functioning workplace while partnering with cross-functional leaders on facility improvements, growth initiatives, and programs that support employees and scientific operations.

This is a fulltime onsite position that requires a minimum of 5 years of regulated biotech, medical device, or pharma industry experience in EHS, workplace safety, environmental compliance, and/or facilities operations.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee EHS, biosafety, chemical management, and environmental compliance programs within a medical device/laboratory environment.
  • Manage environmental compliance activities and vendors related to hazardous and universal waste, air quality, stormwater, permitting, and regulatory reporting.
  • Maintain permits, compliance records, vendor documentation, and audit-ready files.
  • Partner with internal teams and external vendors to address compliance requirements, corrective actions, and site or operational changes.
  • Lead workplace safety and risk management programs, including inspections, risk assessments, safety training, emergency preparedness, and incident follow-up.
  • Manage safety vendors, consultants, training providers, PPE suppliers, and inspection partners.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and internal safety requirements, including training, inspections, postings, and documentation.
  • Oversee PPE programs and coordinate workplace assessments related to indoor air quality, noise, ergonomics, and other employee health and safety concerns.
  • Oversee day-to-day facility operations, maintenance, and preventative maintenance to ensure a safe, reliable, and efficient workplace.
  • Manage facilities vendors and contractors, ensuring quality, responsiveness, cost control, and timely issue resolution.
  • Coordinate facility projects, including relocations, laboratory modifications, equipment moves, and site improvements.
  • Partner with HR and cross-functional teams to improve workplace experience and maintain a safe, functional employee environment.
Required Qualifications:
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Facilities Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in EHS, workplace safety, environmental compliance, facilities, or related site operations; biotech, pharma, medical device, or other regulated industry experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience managing vendors or service providers, including scope definition, onboarding, scheduling, performance tracking, invoice review, issue escalation, and corrective action follow-up.
  • Experience maintaining vendor records, compliance documentation, inspection files, training records, permits, and corrective action trackers in an organized, audit-ready manner, preferably software based.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and Cal/OSHA requirements and California Fire Code 2025.
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance programs applicable to medical device manufacturing, such as 21 CFR 211, 21 CFR 820, and ISO 13485.
  • Familiarity with facilities systems and contractor oversight in a lab environment (e.g., HVAC, alarms, access control, life safety, and equipment installation/commissioning).
  • Strong vendor management skills, including scoping work, coordinating schedules, tracking deliverables, monitoring service quality, reviewing invoices, and resolving issues.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to maintain accurate records, manage corrective actions, and keep compliance files audit-ready.
