Job summary

Viera Charter School in Melbourne, FL is seeking a full-time Custodian to maintain clean, safe facilities. Responsibilities include cleaning classrooms, halls, restrooms, and common areas; operating HVAC systems for comfort and efficiency; reporting repairs; and assisting with minor repairs and event setup.

Responsibilities

• Keeps building and premises neat, clean and safe at all times.
• Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning to maintain comfortable temperatures and conserve resources.
• Checks daily that exit doors are open and panic bars function during occupancy.
• Sweeps classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
• Cleans corridors after school and during the day as needed.
• Disinfects toilet floors and cleans fixtures daily.
• Washes windows inside and out at least twice a year.
• Keeps grounds free from rubbish; maintains exterior areas.
• Cleans chalkboards weekly.
• Reports major repairs to Facilities Coordinator/Manager.
• Assist with painting and minor carpentry and other small repairs.
• Assist in classroom setup and furniture repairs.
• Clean and sanitize classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, offices and common areas.
• Monitor and maintain building security by locking/unlocking doors; assist in drills and safety protocols.
• Set up and take down equipment for events; ensure spaces are ready for use.
• Keep inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies; report shortages.

• Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat, clean and safe at all times.
• Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
• Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
• Sweeps classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
• Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires it.
• Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
• Washes all windows on both inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
• Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
• Cleans all chalkboards at least once a week.
• Report major repairs needed promptly to the Facilities Coordinator and/or Facilities Manager.
• Maintain the school's exterior grounds, including trash pickup(similar to #8)
• Assist with painting, minor carpentry, and other small repair projects
• Assist in classroom setup and furniture repairs
• Cleaning and sanitizing classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, offices, administration areas, and common areas
• Sweep, mop, dust, vacuum and clean door windows and stairwells daily
• Refill supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper in restrooms
• Monitor and maintain security of the building by locking/unlocking doors at designated times.
• Assist in Emergency Drills and ensure that all safety protocols are followed
• Check all doors throughout the day to ensure all doors are locked and report any repairs to the Facilities Manager
• Report any safety hazards or concerns to the Dean of Safety, Security and Facilities
• Assist with setting up and taking down equipment, chairs, and tables for school events and activities
• Ensure even spaces are clean and ready for use before and after events
• Keep inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies, reporting shortages to the Manager of Facilities
• Conduct routine inspections of building systems such as lighting and plumbing to ensure proper function
• Work closely with custodial staff, teachers, and administration to ensure the facility meets the needs of the school community
• Assist with special projects and tasks as assigned by the Manager of Facilities or Supervisor of Facilities
• Ensure walkways, entrances and grounds are clean, clear and safe for daily use.
• Performs any other duties assigned by Facilities Manager, Supervisor or Principal

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Medium work: ability to lift, push and/or pull objects, which may approximate 50 lbs.
• Ability to stand for up to six (6) continuous hours.
• Ability to stand, stoop, reach and bend; mobility of arms to reach, dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate large and small objects.
• Ability to smell, taste and feel, in order to determine quality of food products.
• Work with caustic and non-caustic chemicals.
• Ability to work with frequent interruption and to supervise a variety of tasks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• The employee may be required to work around loud noise.
• Ability to work in an inside environment.
