Job summary

Barnard College seeks a Carpenter to perform core carpentry tasks Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 3:30pm, with possible overtime. Duties include reading plans, constructing and repairing wood and composite items, installing floors, doors, cabinets, and furniture, and maintaining tool inventory.

The role requires journey-level skills and a valid driver’s license. The position reports to Facilities Services and may involve interfacing with outside contractors.

Qualifications

• Trade or vocational school graduate or certified apprenticeship.
• Minimum five years of related work experience.
• Proficient with hand and power tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of wood types and their finishes (paints/stains).
• Ability to read diagrams, blueprints and specifications.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Physically fit to lift and work in confined/overhead spaces.
• Willing to work overtime.

Responsibilities

• Read plans and sketches; construct carpentry items from design details.
• Estimate labor; requisition materials; maintain inventory.
• Repair/construct partitions, doors, windows, ceilings and furniture.
• Assemble and install cabinets, shelves, and related wood/metal items.
• Install floor coverings, replace glass, and install window treatments.
• Observe safety rules; maintain clean, organized work area.
