Position Title:Facilities Carpenter

Position Status:Part Time – Fixed-Term, Hourly, Non-Exempt (Onsite)

Work Schedule:20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Duration:Approximately six (6) months

The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston is seeking an experienced and versatile part-time Carpenter to join our Facilities team. This is a six-month position with the potential to become a regular part-time role.

The ideal candidate will be a skilled, proactive, and reliable tradesperson with experience in general carpentry, safe use of power tools, and basic plumbing and electrical tasks. The schedule will be onsite Monday through Friday, 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Overview

The Facilities Carpenter is responsible for supporting overall maintenance and upkeep of the museum’s building spaces, as well as working efficiently with other internal ICA departments to support event set up and break down needs. The Facilities Carpenter will provide carpentry, basic plumbing, electrical assistance and support as needed to the Facilities Manager and the Director of Facilities. The hands-on work will be conducted at all three ICA sites, Seaport Museum, Seaport Studio and Watershed (East Boston location).

WORKING AT THE ICA

All ICA employees are required to reside in Massachusetts and within commuting distance from our Seaport location as of their first day of work.

Responsibilities

Carpentry:

  • Perform maintenance, repair, and installation of structures and fixtures within the museum, including walls, flooring, ceilings, doors and trims.
  • General woodworking needs as directed by Facilities.
  • Perform a range of carpentry tasks, such as repairing desks, tables, and cabinets, as needed for museum operations.

Facilities Maintenance and Event Support:

  • Support the Facilities team with building maintenance and event setup/breakdown needs.
  • Work on a variety of projects, from small-scale maintenance to large scale team projects.

Power tools and safety:

  • Operate and maintain a wide variety of hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
  • Strictly adhere to all ICA safety standards and relevant building codes, including OSHA guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to prevent accidents, especially during high-traffic hours.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.

Basic plumbing and electrical:

  • Perform minor plumbing repairs and installations, such as fixing faucets or unclogging drains.
  • Handle basic electrical tasks, including replacing switches and light fixtures.

General:

  • Work collaboratively with other museum staff and departments to ensure operational excellence.
  • Communicate with the Facilities Manager about material needs and project progress.
  • Complete work in accordance with all applicable safety requirements (e.g. OSHA), codes and ICA policies and procedures.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a carpentry apprenticeship or vocational program is preferred.
  • Proven experience as a professional carpenter. Experience in a museum, gallery, or public building is a plus.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Solid understanding of standard carpentry methods, construction/OSHA safety standards, and procedures. OSHA 10 certification a plus.
  • Experience with basic plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials (up to 50–100 lbs) as needed.
  • Ability to work autonomously and with a team, and take direction from others.
  • Ability to problem solve in fast-paced environment
  • Ability to patch and paint interior areas
  • Ability to meet deadlines and respond to emergencies.
  • Valid Mass driver’s license with clean driving record, a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Possess mobility to work in an office setting and use office equipment; move about throughout the museum, and travel between different building locations, and off-site storage areas.
  • Ability to see, listen and talk for extended periods in person, over the telephone and computer to exchange accurate information with departments and vendors and understand printed materials
  • Possess the ability to meet the physical demands of the job, use of ladders, hand and power tools, overhead work, including operating mechanical lifts and genies, lifting a minimum of 50 lbs., push, pull, gripping, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, climbing and bending for long periods may be required.
  • Must be able to tolerate loud noises for long periods of time and use safety equipment to perform tasks as required.
