Qualifications

  • Minimum: One year of work experience or exposure to mechanical, electrical, or plumbing systems (commercial or institutional preferred).

  • Minimum: Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel).

Responsibilities

  • Assist team members with routine and corrective maintenance on building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Support the inspection, operation, and basic troubleshooting of HVAC equipment such as pumps, cooling towers, air handlers, and related systems.
  • Help monitor and adjust building controls, gauges, thermostats, and valves under the guidance of experienced staff.
  • Participate in regular building rounds to observe equipment conditions and help complete minor repairs.
  • Assist with general building maintenance tasks including lighting, hardware, and fixture repairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks by following provided instructions, training, and industry best practices.
  • Learn to inspect mechanical rooms, pumps, generators, and life‑safety systems, documenting observations and reporting issues promptly.
  • Support fire and life‑safety compliance by following NFPA guidelines and local codes.
  • Respond to facility needs and emergencies alongside senior team members, maintaining professionalism at all times.
  • Help maintain safe, clean, and organized work areas and follow all County safety policies and training requirements.
  • Represent the County professionally, following uniform and appearance standards.

St. Louis County is seeking a dedicated and skilled Facilities Apprentice Lead (Job Class: Laborer Lead) to help support the Facilities team by assisting with daily maintenance tasks, learning building system operations, and helping troubleshoot issues across County facilities. This entry‑level role is designed for individuals who are eager to learn the trades, grow their skills, and contribute to keeping County buildings safe, functional, and comfortable.

The starting salary is between $16.80 - $20.16 / hour and will be based on your experience and qualifications. There is a $6.00 hourly increase for positions in Transportation & Public Works when reporting for emergency snow removal services as required in the job class summary.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
  • Safety training within facilities or manufacturing facilities
  • Desire to learn about HVAC, Plumbing & Electrical systems within County Facilities
  • Asbestos Certification or similar
Work Environment

This role supports multiple County sites and requires travel between locations in various weather conditions. Work may include shift assignments, on‑call rotations, weekend coverage, and occasional overtime during urgent situations.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and safely move tools and equipment
  • Frequent standing, climbing, bending, crouching, and reaching
  • Clear verbal communication and ability to read technical documents and schematics
  • Ability to move across multiple floors and buildings as part of regular duties
