St. Louis County is seeking a Mechanical Inspector to inspect HVAC, piping, and related mechanical systems for conformance with applicable codes and standards.
The role involves evaluating equipment installations, reading blueprints, and ensuring compliance across commercial, industrial, and residential sites. Responsibilities include issuing notices for non-conforming work, coordinating with contractors, and documenting inspection findings.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Inspector.
This position is responsible for performing inspections of mechanic equipment systems and components, special mechanical equipment, and/or related sites to determine compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, standards, plans, and specifications.
The typical work hours will be from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday. The starting salary for this position will be between $23.68 / hour - $28.42 / hour and will be based on individual experience, formal training, and qualifications.

Inspects and evaluates mechanical construction/installation by visually inspecting and evaluating the performance and safe installation and operation of commercial, industrial and residential HVAC, piping, lifting and moving, and other mechanical systems and equipment, Evaluating blueprints and specifications.
Communicates inspection findings to supervisors, contractors, operators and others by discussing problems and deficiencies found; investigating and resolving complaints; providing technical assistance in person or by telephone; preparing inspection reports, log entries and summaries; writing notices and preparing for license violation hearings and court cases.
Prepares for inspection work by accepting work assignments and communicating with management via computer and telephone; planning and scheduling the work to carry out assignments efficiently and in timely fashion; learning the applicable codes (ASME, SMACNA, County and other codes), regulations, requirements, and Public Works Practices and Procedures applicable to the work and attending training.
Performs technical work in the inspection of construction alteration and safety of elevators, escalators, and other related devices for compliance with codes and regulations.
Ensures installations or alterations are in conformity with plans and are incompliance with code.
Performs such other work, with the required abilities and under the indicated working conditions and environment, as may properly be required of a position in this job class.

Balance, bend at the waist, climb or work on stairs and ladders; exposure to dust/dirt, fumes and hazardous materials; kneel, reach above shoulder level, stand or walk for long periods; walk on uneven ground; work from bucket trucks.
A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available. The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job-related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire. The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision. All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
