The Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to becoming a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Job Description

As a Machinist/ Fabricator Project Maintenance Technician, your primary responsibilities will include metal cutting, fabrication, MIG/TIG welding of steel, and aluminum. You will work with blueprints and be responsible for the rigging and moving of heavy equipment. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform metal cutting and fabrication tasks according to specifications and blueprints.
  • Conduct MIG/TIG welding on steel and aluminum welding.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to determine project requirements.
  • Operate and maintain welding, cutting, and fabrication equipment.
  • Ensure all welds meet quality standards and specifications.
  • Operate manual milling machines and lathes to create precision parts and components.
  • Use measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to ensure precision and accuracy.
  • Utilize rigging techniques to safely move and position heavy equipment and materials.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, including grinders, saws, and drills.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring shop cleanliness at all times.
  • Collaborate with team members to meet project deadlines and ensure efficient workflow.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on machinery and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
  • Additional responsibilities include occasional supporting of breakdown team and PM team.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or experience in welding, fabrication, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in welding, fabrication, and machining.
  • Proficiency in MIG and TIG welding of steel; experience in aluminum welding is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
  • Strong knowledge of rigging techniques and experience in moving heavy equipment.
  • Familiarity with a variety of welding, cutting, and fabrication equipment.
  • Operate manual milling machines and lathes to create precision parts and components.
  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools, including grinders, saws, and drills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions.
  • Willingness to work with various teams including engineering, division, and outside contractors.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, lift heavy objects, and work in various positions.
  • Commitment to maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
Working Conditions
  • Good working conditions.
  • Heavy lifting in rare instances typically assisted.
  • Majority of time light lifting is involved.
  • Some exposure to elements of dirt, dust, fumes, heat, cold, and noise, but none to the extent of being disagreeable.

The range for this position is $31.50 hourly rate - $35.75 hourly rate. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
