Job summary

Crane Company is seeking a pre-fabrication associate to cut, drill, cope, and roll piping/tubing for vacuum jacketed pipes and flex hoses, assembling kits and preparing for welding while upholding safety and quality. You will read engineering drawings and BOMs, use hand tools and saws, verify parts, coordinate with the supervisor, and help with packing and documentation to ensure on-time shipments.

Qualifications

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and BOMs for fabrication.
  • Able to use hand tools and cutting equipment with care and precision.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and observe safety standards.
  • Capable of measuring and verifying parts to close tolerances.
  • Experience with cutting equipment like chop, circular, and band saws is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Use hand tools, saws and a hydraulic press to prep pipe for welding.
  • Cut pipes to accurate angles and tolerances (miters, copes, fish mouth).
  • Inspect material, kit pre-fabricated parts, and track inventory.
  • Read drawings/BOMs to ensure correct material and dimensions.
  • Coordinate with supervisor on issues and ensure parts are available.
  • Package finished goods and document heat numbers and markings.

Job description

Position Summary

This role is responsible for pre-fabrication tasks comprised of cutting, drilling, coping, and rolling operations of piping/tubing/flex/spiral wrap and material kitting to manufacture vacuum jacketed pipes and flex hoses into a finished products while maintaining standards in safety and quality in order to meet the customer's needs.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Uses primarily hand tools, table saws, band saws, and hydraulic press to prepare pipe for welding
  • Cuts pipes to various angles (miter, cope, fish mouth, hole punches) ensuring tight tolerance fit
  • Waterjet machining experience considered a plus
  • Receives, issues, stores, and inspects material and parts as required to fulfill production order.
  • Kits pre-fabricated material and inventory items in preparation for welding.
  • Examines pipe and/or hoses and parts to be assembled to assure they are correct, including size, material and machining and consults Supervisor or Leader on questionable issues.
  • Assures that assembly parts are available.
  • Pick-up and delivers kitted parts to the designated work area(s).
  • Pick-up and delivers the order card(s) to the appropriate planner as noted on the card.
  • Uses computer system to make inquiries and track availability of inventory.
  • Closes work orders.
  • Assembles parts in established sequence through established procedures to assure quality of fit and operation.
  • Coordinates associated paperwork to record test results for documentation accompanying shipments
  • Read ands interprets engineering drawings and BOMS to ensure proper cuts are made dimensionally correct and proper material is used.
  • Trims parts, and pipe and/or hoses linings to assure proper fit.
  • Adjusts pipe and/or hoses parts to assure proper fit.
  • May assemble standard pipe and/or hoses and specialty pipe and/or hoses
  • Sets up and performs special testing based on routing sheet specifications.
  • Assures that all routing sheet specifications are accomplished.
  • Exercises judgment on product quality regarding casting quality, machining and fit.
  • Assists in packaging of finished goods into the appropriate shipping container (box, crate, pallet, etc.)
  • Verifies and records heat numbers and material markings for various customers.
  • Advises coworkers and Team Leader of special customer requirements -- eg., special paint requirement.
  • Proficiently uses hand tools to blend materials to assure proper fit.
  • Participates actively in Operational Excellence and Quality processes including project team involvement, problem solving, and recommending solutions to enhance and improve the quality of departmental and/or company-wide business activities.
  • Completes RTY data recordings for quality and process issues, as required
  • Completes daily, weekly, and monthly 5S requirements
  • Maintains safety as utmost priority and proactively reports safety issues or incidents
  • Performs QAD transactions as needed to transfer and back-flush material in proper sequence to maintain accurate inventory levels and status.
  • Performs other work as assigned by Supervisor or Team Leader
Qualifications / Experience
  • Skill in the care and use of applicable hand and pneumatic tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and bills of material (BOM) .
  • Ability to work from verbal and written instructions, drawings, diagrams and routing sheets.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, on conditions necessitating ingenuity, initiative and judgment.
  • Product knowledge sufficient to perform Principal Responsibilities with little supervision needed.
  • High degree of physical and mental dexterity and visual attention for sustained period required.
  • Ability to detect defects in products and exercise independent judgment on repair capability.
  • Experience with cutting equipment such as chop saws, circular saws, band saws, or cutting wheels.
  • Working knowledge of shop mathematics.
  • Previous welding experience or supporting welding functions considered a plus
  • Ability to work with measurement devices (ex- rulers, measuring tapes, calipers, micrometers)
  • Ability to sustain moderate physical effort, working with light to medium weight material.
  • Lifting, bending, twisting, carrying, pushing and pulling are common and repetitious.
  • Concentrated mental and visual attention in working to close tolerances is required.
  • High degree of physical and manual dexterity and visual attention for sustained period also required.
  • Ability to read and understand standard work instructions
  • High school education
