Mestek Machinery in Dallas, TX is seeking a Material Handler for the Fabrication Department. You will safely receive, transport, and stage sheet metal and raw materials, supporting lasers, brakes, welding, and downstream cells to maintain production flow.

The role requires forklift and overhead crane operation, basic shop math, and ERP data entry. You will help with inventory control, cycle counts, and safety compliance while assisting machine operators and cross-training in other areas.

Qualificações

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2–5 years in a manufacturing environment.
• Forklift and overhead crane certification (or ability to certify within 30 days).
• Ability to read and interpret work orders and fabrication documents.
• Experience in a metal fabrication or industrial environment.
• Knowledge of basic shop math and measurement principles.
• Strong attention to detail and safety.
• Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
• Willingness to cross-train and work flexible shifts and overtime.
• Basic computer skills (ERP, Excel, Word).

Responsabilidades

• Receive and unload sheet steel, tubing, angle, using forklifts and overhead cranes.
• Count or weigh incoming materials to verify quantities.
• Stock raw materials in designated locations and maintain organized storage areas.
• Pull sheet metal and raw materials for fabrication orders.
• Stage materials for lasers, press brakes, weld cells, and downstream departments.
• Transport materials and WIP throughout the fabrication process to maintain flow.
• Maintain clean, organized staging areas for raw materials and WIP.
• Deliver consumables and small items to machine operators.
• Ensure scrap and trash bins are emptied regularly for safety.
• Charge time accurately to work orders and maintain paperwork.
• Verify material type, gauge, and quantity before staging or delivering.
• Identify quality issues and follow NCM procedures.
• Perform ERP receiving and inventory transactions (Level 2).
• Track inventory usage and document part movement.
• Report missing or damaged materials promptly.
• Maintain FIFO rotation for sheet steel and consumables.
• Update MDI boards to reflect material flow status.
• Participate in team meetings focused on workflow improvement and safety.
• Assist in training and mentoring new material handlers.
• Support cross-functional initiatives to reduce lead time and improve quality.
• Assist with root-cause documentation for material errors and process issues.
• Audit material accuracy and documentation (Level 2).
• Collaborate with fabrication leads, supervisors, and other departments to resolve flow challenges.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

The Material Handler – Fabrication Department plays a critical role in supporting production by safely receiving, moving, staging, and tracking sheet metal, raw materials, and work-in-process throughout the fabrication workflow. This position ensures that lasers, press brakes, welding, and downstream departments receive the right materials at the right time to maintain efficient production flow. The position requires forklift and overhead crane operation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Operational

• Receive and unload sheet steel, tubing, angle, and other commodities using forklifts and overhead cranes.
• Count or weigh incoming materials to verify correct quantities
• Stock raw materials in designated locations and maintain organized, clearly labeled storage areas
• Pull sheet metal and raw materials for fabrication orders
• Stage materials for lasers, press brakes, weld cells, and downstream departments
• Transport materials and WIP throughout the fabrication process to maintain flow
• Maintain clean, organized staging areas for raw materials and WIP
• Support machine operators by delivering consumables and small items
• Ensure scrap and trash bins are emptied regularly to maintain a safe environment
• Charge time accurately to work orders and maintain required paperwork

Quality & Documentation

• Verify correct material type, gauge, and quantity before staging or delivering
• Identify quality issues and follow Nonconforming Material (NCM) procedures
• Perform accurate receiving and inventory transactions in the ERP system (Level 2)
• Track inventory usage and document part movement
• Report missing or damaged materials promptly
• Maintain documentation standards for cycle counts and inventory accuracy (Level 2)
• Ensure compliance with material traceability requirements
• Track scrap weights and types for reporting
• Maintain FIFO rotation for sheet steel and consumables
• Update MDI boards to reflect material flow status.

Maintenance & Safety

• Perform routine daily and weekly preventative maintenance checks on forklifts and overhead cranes
• Monitor equipment for wear, damage, or safety concerns and report issues immediately
• Maintain adequate supplies needed for daily workflow
• Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and environmental protocols
• Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area
• Participating in team meetings focused on workflow improvement, safety, and production goals
• Assist in training and mentoring new or junior material handlers
• Support cross-functional initiatives to reduce lead time and improve quality
• Assist with root-cause documentation for material errors and process issues
• Audit material accuracy and documentation within the department (Level 2)
• Collaborate with fabrication leads, supervisors, and other departments to resolve material flow challenge
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Position Requirements:

• Highschool diploma or equivalent work experience.
• 2 - 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Forklift and Overhead crane certification (or ability to certify in 30 days).
• Ability to read and interpret work orders, material tags, and basic fabrication documents.
• Experience in a metal fabrication or industrial environment.
• Knowledge of basic shop math and measurement principles.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
• Physically able to lift top 50 lbs. and stand for extended period of times.
• Willingness to cross train in other departments.
• Willingness to work flexible shifts and overtime as needed.

Preferred

• Experience handling sheet metal bundles or large plate.
• Experience supporting lasers, turrets, brakes, and weld operations.
• Experience with cycle counts or inventory control.
• Familiarity with 5s or lean manufacturing principles.
• Prior experience in a high-mix custom manufacturing environment.
