Job summary

MITRE's Mechanical and Reliability Department offers a hands-on internship in fabrication and prototype development. You will work with shop staff to fabricate quality parts, use hand tools and welding equipment, and support maintenance and safety practices on-site in Massachusetts.

Applicants must be a full-time technical high school student enrolled in a manufacturing or metal fabrication program, with an interest in public service and the MITRE mission.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled full-time in a Technical High School and continue to be enrolled the semester after the internship.
• Must be a student in a manufacturing or metal fabrication program or similar
• Demonstrated interest in serving the public
• Proficiency in gas metal and shielded metal arc welding (preferred)
• Working knowledge of 3D & 2D CAD software (preferred)

Responsibilities

• Work with shop staff to fabricate and produce quality parts
• Operate hand-held power tools, drill press, band saw, press brake and shears, welding equipment
• Perform shop maintenance and operate equipment used in shop processes
• Follow proper safety guidelines including wearing PPE

The Mechanical and Reliability Department provides innovative solutions for electronic prototypes designed for advanced sensing, communication, and navigation systems on ground, airborne, and shipboard platforms. Staff from this group are critical to all aspects of prototype or system development, including conceptual design, system integration, fabrication, testing, and environmental qualification. We provide technical guidance through rigorous analytical, physical, and computational methods with data driven products to enhance decision making and risk management.

Job Responsibilities

• Work with shop staff to fabricate and produce quality parts
• Have knowledge and experience in operating the following: hand-held power tools, drill press, band saw, press brake and shears, welding equipment
• Perform additional duties related to shop maintenance and operations including maintaining shop and equipment used in shop processes
• Follow all proper safety guidelines including wearing proper PPE

Basic Qualifications

• Sustained excellence in academic performance
• Must be a student enrolled full-time in a Technical High School and continue to be enrolled full-time the semester following the internship.
• Must be a student enrolled in a manufacturing or metal fabrication technical program or similar
• Demonstrated interest in serving the public

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency in gas metal and shielded metal arc welding
• Working knowledge of 3D & 2D CAD (Computer Aided Design) software

Salary compensation range and midpoint:

$31,200 - $35,500 - $42,600 Annual
