Primary Responsibilities

• Material Handling:
  • Lift raw materials and finished products, manually, or using hoists, or forklifts.
  • Transfer finished products, raw materials, tools, or equipment between storage and work areas of plants and warehouses, by hand or using hand trucks or powered lift trucks.
  • Separate products according to weight, grade, size, or composition of materials used to produce them.
• Equipment and small tool operations:
  • Operate machinery used in the fabrication process (saws, punches, shear, etc.) or assist machine operators.
  • Grind welds and chip weld splatter
  • Start machines or equipment to begin production processes.
  • Perform minor repairs to machines, such as replacing damaged or worn parts.
• General Duties:
  • Assist production workers in various ways such as; supplying or holding materials or tools, cleaning work areas and equipment and accurate use of a tape measure.
  • Count finished products to determine if product orders are complete.
  • Mark or tag identification on parts.
  • Raw material inventory.
• Shop Maintenance:
  • General shop, yard, and daily equipment maintenance as assigned
• Safety:
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company and OSHA safety standards.

Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities, and Competencies

• Knowledge of the applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions
• Knowledge of the standard methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment of a steel fabrication shop
• Skill in the use and care of a variety of hand and power tools and equipment of the trade
• Skill in welding and cutting tools and techniques is desirable
• Safe and skilled use of basic rigging, hoisting, and lifting
• Ability to lift, carry, and handle items weighing up to 50 pounds frequently
• Knowledge of overhead crane and forklift operator signaling
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
• Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
• Familiarity with common structural steel shapes
