Extracurricular Activities Athletic Coach

JOB DESCRIPTION: The athletic coach (certified or support staff) instructs a school’s competitive sports team during a sports season. Their duties include recruiting students, uniform and equipment maintenance, keeping consistent roster and attendance records, as well as ensuring an emphasis is placed on sportsmanship and fair play, leadership, and skill development of individuals and the team. Athletic coaches should possess knowledge (or be open to acquiring the knowledge) of methods, techniques, and procedures to teach the sport. Athletic coaches need to develop and encourage improved social, emotional, and physical skills, as well as foster an environment that is fun and builds positive self-esteem.

QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of extracurricular programming, have a working understanding of coaching youth athletics, student supervision, safety procedures, district policies, and ensure students meet and follow district-wide eligibility requirements. Possess effective communication, interpersonal, organizational, leadership, problem-solving, and time management skills. Ability to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and professionalism.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • At the beginning of the season, attend a coach’s meeting and conduct a parent and athlete meeting to outline expectations;
  • Attend coach trainings addressing relevant topics to further develop as a youth coach and to better support the student athletes (e.g. facilitating the development of perseverance & resilience within students, amongst additional training topics);
  • Plan and supervise students participating on their sports team while on their school campus, while visiting other Alhambra school campuses, or other school district campuses;
  • Maintain accurate and up to date student attendance using the school Google attendance link provided by the campus Extracurricular Activities Site Lead, which will serve as the team roster and the coaches time and effort log;
  • Must be well versed in the rules, strategies, and techniques of the sport in order to create effective practices for students to learn skill development and strategic game plans;
  • Attend all home and away games, coaching kids throughout;
  • Ensure all rules, safety guidelines, and uniforms established by the district are adhered to;
  • Submit and/or maintain paperwork and forms for all athletic events including but not limited to: score reporting, consent and participation, insurance, sports physicials, code of conduct, eligibility, fundraisers, and concession sales to your Extracurricular Activities Site Lead;
  • Count and submit, to your Extracurricular Activities Site Lead or Administrator, all the money collected from concession sales or fundraisers before leaving at the end of each day;
  • Maintain professionalism with all students, staff, parents, and community members at all times;
  • Communicate effectively with parents and school administration;
  • Follow all directions from the Extracurricular Activities Site Leads on any campus;
  • Maintain inventory of uniforms and equipment for the sport you are coaching, and ensure secure storage is maintained throughout the year of all items;
  • Ensure uniforms are properly cleaned, according to the directions, and accounted for throughout the entire season;
  • Submit grade eligibility forms, to your Extracurricular Activities Site Lead, to ensure proper student participation is maintained;
  • When traveling, Coaches must ride the bus sitting with the athletes to ensure the maintenance of appropriate bus safety protocol and to ensure that every athlete that rode the bus to the game is also returning on the bus after the game unless the parents sign the student out from the coach;
  • Stay with students before and after a game, practice, or event to ensure they are properly on the bus home or are picked up by a parent. All coaches are dismissed from their coaching duties once all students are gone from the campus;
  • Promote and celebrate the accomplishments of the extracurricular teams in a variety of media including: school websites and school newsletter;
  • Ability to coach indoors, outdoors, and in adverse weather conditions, including heat, rain, and/or wind;
  • Frequent standing, walking, and the ability to lift and move up to 30 lbs.;
  • Prepare and maintain athletic areas (gyms and fields) safely and to the specifications of the sport;

OFF CONTRACT PAY: Upon satisfactory completion of the responsibilities listed above and the conclusion of the season, athletic coaches will earn $1500. The completion of accurate student attendance for the duration of the season is the time and effort log for this position and is required at the completion of the season to receive payment.
