CLASS SUMMARY: Under general direction, coach sports activities to students, including creating game plans, observing practice drills, explaining safety, rules and history of the sport, scheduling activities and tournaments, preparing facilities, and coordinating staff.
Essential Duties
- Creates game plans; develops practice drills; observes students to correct mistakes; oversees competition.
- Schedules buses, staff, referees, custodial, and cafeteria services for practices and games; ensures students are picked up; prepares facilities.
- Communicates expectations, status, schedules, and rules to administration, staff, parents, and students; holds parent‑athlete meetings.
- Explains and enforces safety rules; lectures on history and purpose of sport; demonstrates equipment use.
- Uses health service protocols to ensure safety; explains techniques for skill development.
- Ensures athletes meet grade and behavior requirements; demonstrates sportsmanship.
- Announces tryouts; distributes and collects permission slips; selects and posts team members.
- Attends meetings with other district coaches; organizes competitions and tournaments.
- Purchases, maintains, repairs equipment and uniforms; keeps inventory and records.
- Hosts sports recognition events and distributes awards.
- Performs other duties as required.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to being hired.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education.
- One year of teaching experience.
- Valid Arizona Department of Education Teacher Certificate.
Knowledge and Skills
- Understanding of early, middle, and adolescent childhood.
- Supervising children, including safety and health issues.
- Developing age‑appropriate lessons and instructing children.
- Identifying safety hazards for children.
- Understanding rules of the sport.
- Encouraging communication skills with supervisors, staff, and students.
Physical Requirements
Requires frequent standing, talking, handling, walking, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Working Environment
Occasional exposure to outdoor weather; moderate noise levels.
