Job Description

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving multiple counties in Northeastern Illinois. The Transportation Department ensures safe, reliable, and efficient service across various lines and oversees several departments, including Rules, Dispatching, Crew Management, Station Services, Customer Service, Ticket Services, and GPS Center. The department employs nearly 900 transportation staff, who are often the face of Metra.

Under the direction of the Director, Operations, the incumbent may serve as a Tower Operator, Office Clerk, Ticket Agent, Janitor, or perform other duties as assigned. Responsibilities include ensuring safety and compliance with regulations. Positions require 24/7 on-call availability, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and may involve working any shift at any location.

This position is a Lottery Position and a Union role, with starting pay rates subject to the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Benefits information is available here. Metra is a railroad employer under the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not Social Security.

Minimum Requirements
  1. High School diploma or GED equivalent
  2. Ability to type 25 wpm and possess basic data entry skills
  3. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  4. Good verbal, written, and basic arithmetic skills
  5. Valid driver's license
  6. Willingness to travel within Metra's 6-county region
