McKinley Health Center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign seeks an Extra Help Staff Nurse to provide direct patient care and health education using the nursing process. Staff may rotate across Immunization, Travel, Women's Health, and Medical Clinics, including occasional Acute Care Saturdays.

Eligibility requires Illinois RN licensure; BSN preferred with ambulatory care experience and allergy-shot administration.

Qualifications

McKinley Health Center
  • Provides direct patient care and health education activities by utilizing the nursing process. Performs nursing procedures according to established policies and procedures and standing orders.
  • Works in a variety of settings: Immunization & Travel Clinic, Women's Health Clinic, and Medical Clinics, including rotating to Acute Care Clinic on Saturdays and/or occasional holidays.
  • Administers medications and treatments as ordered by the physician.
  • Assists Physician and Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant as needed.
  • Maintains unit flow by assisting fellow staff members, as needed, including but not limited to: check in and prepares patients for appointments; answers phones from other departments, assumes duties of Medical Assistant and clerks as needed.
  • Functions as an Office Nurse when designated.
  • Functions as unit Charge Nurse when designated. The Charge Nurse works directly under the supervision of the Administrative Nurse III and reports daily to the Administrative Nurse. Specific duties and responsibilities will vary depending on the clinical area to which assigned.
  • Collaborates in the development and implementation of unit goals, policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the orientation of new unit personnel.
  • Maintains professional skills and knowledge.
  • Participates in unit Quality Assessment Programs.
  • Accepts committee appointments.
  • Responsible and accountable to support and ensure a culture of safety, quality and risk management including compliance with ethics.
  • Assumes appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit.
Job Summary

Provides direct care and health education for patients, including but not limited to, those with acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, by utilizing the nursing process: assessment of the patient's problem, development and implementation of a nursing care plan, evaluation of the effectiveness of the plan, and revision of the plan of care as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Nursing or four-year degree.

Nursing experience in an ambulatory care setting.

Previous experience administering and handling allergy shots, including following appropriate injection procedures, patient safety protocols, and post-administration monitoring.

Rate of Pay

The rate of pay for Extra Help - Staff Nurse positions start at $40 per hour and increases based on level of work. The rate of pay is determined by the job description submitted by the department.

Work Schedule

We offer short or long-term assignments up to 900 hours, which is about 6-months of full-time work. Employees can work either full or partial days and full or partial weeks.

Extra Help Positions

Extra Help employees are appointed to fulfill casual or emergent needs within units. The amount of time for which services are needed is not usually predictable and payment for work performed is on an hourly basis and based on actual hours worked. Extra Help employees do not receive holiday pay or paid sick or vacation leave.

Extra Help employees are required by State Universities Civil Service System rules to take a 30-calendar-day break after working 900 hours. At the end of the 30 days, you may begin another 900-hour employment cycle in a new position if available. Working Extra Help will in no way affect any other employment opportunities with the University of Illinois, including your position on and Civil Service register.
