Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Manager/Supervisor performs phlebotomy in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The Extra Help Phlebotomist must exhibit the ability to work independently in all inpatient units and outpatient settings, demonstrating the nuanced knowledge required to successfully serve patients in these settings.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages in various inpatient or outpatient locations.
  • Prioritizes and organizes work to meet turnaround time requirements for patient care areas.
  • Greet patients, screen preparedness for tests requested, i.e., fasting, special diet.
  • If patient is adequately prepared, instruct patient to wait to be called.
  • If patient is not prepared, give appropriate instructions and make return appointment.
  • Answer phones for inquiries of results.
  • Recall data via LIS and report by phone.
  • Trace results not yet posted.
  • Make decisions as to the completeness of specimens/specimen requests.
  • Performs manual computer procedures for releasing orders, entering manual paper orders, cancelling, and/or crediting tests ordered.
  • Performs basic front desk functions including appointment check-in, registration, and verifying billing information when needed.
  • Appropriately escalate problems to Supervisor or Manager as needed for assistance.
  • Process patient specimens for appropriate transport and delivery to the laboratory.
  • Stock drawing areas and assist other staff in monitoring expendable supplies.
  • Order supplies in Supervisors absence as needed.
  • Provides training and education to new employees or rotating students as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year (12 months) of work experience as a phlebotomist within the last five years.
  • Possession of a current/valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support CPR Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of EPIC
  • ASCP certified
