Job summary

Illinois State University is seeking an Extra Help Food Service worker to assist daily food production and service operations across EMDH venues. Responsibilities include food prep, sanitation, customer service, and cash handling.

You may be assigned to any of our retail venues such as The Landing, Starbucks, McAlister's Deli, Qdoba, or Timbers, as well as Residential Dining Centers. Hours are variable with a cap of 28 hours per week; start date in 2026.

Job Summary

Assists with daily food production and service operations in EMDH food service venues. This position may be assigned to any of our retail venues including the The Landing, Starbucks, McAlister's Deli, Qdoba, or Timbers, as well as one of our Residential Dining Centers.

Additional Information

Benefits include time away from work for eligible employees and the option to participate in the University’s 403(b) Plan.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$16.87 per hour

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Availability to work a variety of shifts and days off, up to 28 hours per week.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of experience in food service.
  • Knowledge of use and operation of cleaning materials, methods and equipment.
  • Ability to perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed instructions.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good customer service skills.
Work Hours

Hours of operation are 6:00 am – 11:00 pm, 7 days a week. Shifts will vary. 28 hours per week maximum.

Functional Expectations
  • Remain at a workstation for extended periods
  • Move about in various locations across campus as needed to complete day-to-day work.
  • Effectively communicate on a daily basis.

Special Instructions for Applicants

Extra Help employees may only work up to 28 hours per week for all University employment. Employees are only paid for hours worked and do not qualify for most benefits including health insurance and retirement, with Illinois State University. However, Extra Help employees are eligible to participate in the University’s supplemental retirement savings plans (403b). Applicable retirement information is provided at the time of hire. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment. In addition, extra help employees may only work up to 900 hours total during their employment.

Illinois State University is authorized to do business within the State of Illinois. All work under this appointment is required to be performed from within the State of Illinois.

Illinois State University will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.
