Job description

Overview

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) offers a postgraduate internship (bachelor’s or master’s level) at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA). The internship focuses on developing medical clinical decision support systems using extended reality (XR) technology for combat casualty care.

Responsibilities
  • Join a community of scientists, engineers, and researchers to develop XR applications for combat casualty care.
  • Participate in projects that include augmented/mixed reality systems, headset/sensor evaluations, integration of medical sensors/devices into headsets, and design of immersive clinical guidance systems.
  • Design, develop, and apply XR applications and end‑user experiences.
  • Write code using C#, C++, Python, Kotlin, Java, or Swift.
  • Implement APIs to write XR applications and use OpenXR standards.
  • Create mixed environments and interactions using game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine.
  • Use SwiftUI and Xcode platforms for iOS development.
  • Create graphical 3‑D holographic designs.
  • Conduct human‑translational research studies.
  • Publish research in scientific journals, present at conferences, and demonstrate technology to stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or an eligible discipline earned within five years of the appointment start date.
  • U.S. military veterans who were honorably discharged (or medically discharged due to a service‑connected disability) and received a bachelor’s or master’s degree within ten years of the desired start date are eligible.
  • Highly competitive applicants should have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:
    • Software development in augmented, mixed, or virtual reality.
    • XR hardware platforms such as HoloLens, Apple Vision Pro, Quest, Vive, etc.
    • Human‑factors engineering.
    • Certifications in Nelson’s usability heuristics.
Eligibility
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen or Law‑Permanent Resident.
  • Discipline: Computer, Information and Data Sciences; Computer Science (general); Data Science; Information Science and Technology; Software Engineering.
  • Veteran preference: degree received within the last 120 months.
Appointment Details

Location: San Antonio, Texas.

Start date: As soon as possible; exact date to be determined at the time of selection.

Duration: Twelve‑month research appointment with the possibility of renewal and extension based on funding availability and project assignment.

Compensation and Benefits

Stipend: $64,000.00 – $81,100.00 per year (range varies by degree level and experience).
