Job summary

Good Shepherd Church is seeking an after-care assistant to supervise students in the program. You will check students in/out, supervise indoor and outdoor activities, and support holistic development in a faith-based environment.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent and strong communication skills; prior child-care experience is preferred. Work hours vary, primarily weekday afternoons and some extended summer sessions.

Responsibilities

• Provides after-school supervision for students.
• Checks students in and signs them out to approved adults.
• Observes and participates in children’s play activities, small or large groups.
• Provides supervised outdoor playtime when weather permits.
• Supports students' spiritual, academic, social, emotional, and physical development.
• Redirects inappropriate behavior and applies the program discipline system.
• Communicates with supervisor and parents about problems during after-school hours.
• Reports issues to supervisor or principal.
• Hours usually include weekday afternoons and extended summer hours.

SUMMARY

The after-care assistant provides quality supervision for students participating in the program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. • Provides after-school supervision for students.
• Checks students in and signs them out to approved adults.
• Observes, monitors, and participate in children’s play activities whether small group or whole group.
• Provides supervised playtime outside (weather permitting) to provide a sage and positive environment.
• Fosters and supports the student’s spiritual, academic, social, emotional, and physical development.
• Efficiently redirects inappropriate student behaviors and implements the program discipline system to effectively monitor and guide proper student behavior.
• Communicates with the supervisor as well as parents regarding any problems that may arise during after-school care hours.
• Reports any problems to the supervisor and/or principal.
• Hours for position vary, but usually include weekday afternoons and extended summer hours.

QUALIFICATIONS

CATHOLIC FAITH

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent required; supplemented with previous experience working with children preferred.

• Ability to remain calm, positive and upbeat so as to provide a nurturing atmosphere for all students.
• Ability to be flexible to work with students from ages 5-14.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed mostly indoors in an environmentally controlled setting. Work is to be performed directly on school campuses. Work from home is not permitted. Works frequently in close physical proximity to others and may encounter work in enclosed or tight spaces. Hours for workers may vary depending on need for staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, and see up close and from afar. Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (25 pounds).
